An Olympic Archery hopeful, bellydancer, and friend struggles to make ends meet as a single mom. She’s a courageous woman, who also happens to have a disability. I couldn’t buy her what she needed, but I opened my house to host a fundraiser to help her achieve the goal she is so passionate about.

After a 6 year leukemia struggle, my friend Jim was back in the hospital with no immune system, isolated from friends. My husband & I threw a fundraiser dinner for him where guests contributed for their meal, donated/bought silent auction items, videotaped messages for him, and created him a poster.

Ahimsa- Compassion for all living things is a lynchpin of my yoga practice. I have struggled to have compassion for my own past mistakes as my own worst critic and enemy. When I am more gentle to myself, I find it easier to exercise more understanding towards others.

#560 Yesterday I saw a woman probably younger than I am at the shopping center struggling to still her grocery cart on a sloping pavement in order to load her groceries into her car. I went over and held it for her. She was so grateful and we had a lovely chat!
#558 It’s been a couple of years now that I’ve been a volunteer with a local hospice care provider. My “job” is to visit people whose life expectancy is less than six months and try to offer them (and their caregivers) respite from the woe and pain of their dying process. View site »

#535 I went to a charity bazar this afternoon. There was a thin, poor, early 20’s girl with two babies. She asked the manager if she could try a wedding dress. So she did. Her eyes turned into a river when this man gave her the dress as a gift to persue her biggest dreams and beleive in a generous world.
#534 Well i ran after a homeless man and gave him my mittens. He lived down in the creek by our house and i knew he was very cold.
#521 I spend a few hours every month marketing and promoting the business of a young family struggling to make ends meet. After buying beds, furniture, clothing, and other necessities, we realized that the apartment building was infested heavily with roaches. #199 After my divorce, I returned to college. One day, I needed someone to watch my sick daughter. A woman I knew remotely, agreed. I tried to pay her. She wouldn’t take it, said she had been in a similar situation once and someone had helped her and this was her way of returning the favor.

#178 Years ago i sat in a public park in the darkest depression i have ever experienced. Crying and rocking back and forth, a latino man who spoke little english gave me his mat and blanket, saying to me “Your home, my friend.” I am where i am today because of that mat and blanket.
#160 My friend Amber’s daughter Jessica is dying, she will die anyday. Tonight when I was in visiting Jessica, at the hospital, Amber showed her incredible compassion when she knelt at my feet, beside Jessica’s bed, to lovingly care for my broken foot; an injury so minor compared to her own suffering.
#148 Jessica will die in a few days from a cancerous brain tumor, she is 8 years old. Recently my 10 year old son, Jacob, wore a tuxedo for her Make a Wish-Princess Party in order to be her Prince Charming. He also gave a speech about how wonderful Jessica is and how special knowing her has been to him.
#144 I was very young when I became pregnant. I was abandoned, became homeless and had no job. Friends and strangers from the neighborhood paid for food and a place for me to stay until I could pay for those things myself. My daughter is 25 yrs old now. I am forever grateful, they saved my life and hers
#142 With my four month old twins in tow, I was looking after my father who was dying of cancer in an out-of-town hospital. Ruth, the wife of another patient also dying of cancer, offered to sleep with the twins in the hospital lobby so that I could comfort my father in one of his last nights.

#135 My friend was a doctor in Zambia working on AIDS. He came home with an idea: Link U.S. communities with Zambian caretakers of orphans so the children could go to school. I joined him and others to form Communities Without Borders. Now we are providing education for more than 1100 children. View site »
#124 I was volunteering for a charity out in India and we had a group of children playing ball games. When he realised that one of the children had yet to have a turn, he deliberately made that boy take the next turn. He didn’t know we were watching, and he sought no reward. That’s compassion.
#123 This isn’t mine, but my friends Alex and Tia’s. On their wedding day, Alex and Tia handed us each a pair of Adenium seeds to care for and nurture. What they asked us to do with these plants, I believe, will grow toward humans, too.
#119 I had stage 4 metastatic cancer, and had only a few months to live, if I survived the chemo. So I sold my house to make the transition easier for my kisa, and the new owner, an elderly stranger with her own health problems, made me stay in the house and took care of me while I underwent the chemo.
#118 A homeless man sat on the curb outside a coffee shop. He was dirty and smelled pretty bad. People kept walking by him as if he didn’t exist. There was a great sadness about him so I said “Hello.” He told me his story and I listened. Sometimes all you can do is acknowledge that someone is hurting.
#114 Take time each day to learn one fact about someone new. The people you meet will amaze you with their beauty. Do not act on preconceived notions. Each individual being if different and beautiful in a unique way. Passing judgement on someone before knowing them is not compassionate. Be compassionate!

#101 Friends from Florida, USA recently lost their 21 year old son in an auto accident. Because of his passion to help the poor and the hungry, food and money were collected at his funeral for the local foodbank. The family established a foundation in his name dedicated to feeding the poor.

#98 In January, my best friend got diagnosed with cancer at 23. Some friends couldn’t handle it and dissappeared off the radar. Complete strangers were amazing though. We had letters arrive from all over the world. The support they offered, kind words and compassion will stay with me forever.
#95 I was a foreign student in NY in 1994. Sometimes, walking around town I would go into a church, always a beautiful and calming space to come to. One time I started crying as I sat there. A homeless guy came up to me, and said God be with you. All I could say was you too. He was a compassionate man.

#75 my 72 yr old neighbour thought he had arthritis. Turned out it was cancer. One night he called me and asked if I could stay over night to help. It was day 1 of my 4 week vacation. I stayed all 4 weeks until he passed on.
#69 An aunt of mine knew this poor family who had a girl that was really intelligent but had no means to go to college, so she told her parents that she managed to get her a scholarship and paid for the tuitions herself. The girl is now a mother and became a respected professional in her field.
#63 After my friend’s home burned to the ground this past week, along with all of her possesions (clothes, photos, books), her community came together and collected several boxes of clothing and necessities for her and her partner.
#59 Early morning, bus could not go up the hill in deep snow. People got out & moved on. I stood alone, cold, worried, did not know the area nor speak the language. A native instructed his personal attendant to be w/me. He carried my heavy bag up the steep hill to my final destination. I was moved.
#58 Old couple attended the Dalai Lama’s teaching. Next day, husband asked me to take care of his wife since he could not go. I did so. To express thanks they invited me to a private meeting w/the Dalai Lama. My dream came true from strangers. I cried for 20 min after being w/him. They were his friends.
#53 Our puppy, Emaho escaped the yard and ran to the ocean (foreign territory) She swam miles. Two sailors thought they saw a seal and found her struggling, about to drown. One put her under his sweater and then took her home until I could be found. Their cat sat beside her and comforted her.
#46 I was standing on a train platform on my commute home worrying because my fiance had lost his job the day before. A woman saw the sadness in my face and came up to me and said “don’t worry, things will get better”. Her kind words were unasked for, but incredibly reassuring and heartwarming.
#38 Along with 27 Middlebury College student volunteers, we have created a website that will be used to mentor and tutor 7th graders at the Rafael Hernandez School, in Newark, NewJersey, the North Ward. #35 I approached a store and outside on the ground was an old Japanese man begging. Instead of giving him money, I invited him for lunch. He told of how his daughter died in a car accident and left two boys. The man begs on the side to help the kids. And then I drove him to his home.
#21 I am currently unemployed and living rather hand to mouth. My friend Carol often takes time to bring me fresh fruit and vegetable so I can eat in a healthy way. This is only one example of her many acts of caring. She lives actively the idea of ubuntu. She sees God in all people.
#15 This year I planted a garden in my curb strip to help out my less fortunate neighbors. At the end of the summer, a man stoped by and told me that he and his wife lost their jobs and my garden was their only sorce for fresh vegitables. I’m now trying to get funding for a large community garden.
