Today I gave my 8 year old friend, Jessica, final kisses and words. And as I sat with her family, around her bedside during her final hours, I realized that the only truly meaningful thing we do as humans is to lovingly and compassionately hold the hands of others until it is time to say goodbye. My friend Amber’s daughter Jessica is dying, she will die anyday. Tonight when I was in visiting Jessica, at the hospital, Amber showed her incredible compassion when she knelt at my feet, beside Jessica’s bed, to lovingly care for my broken foot; an injury so minor compared to her own suffering.

Jessica will die in a few days from a cancerous brain tumor, she is 8 years old. Recently my 10 year old son, Jacob, wore a tuxedo for her Make a Wish-Princess Party in order to be her Prince Charming. He also gave a speech about how wonderful Jessica is and how special knowing her has been to him.

My Inspiration (3)
#144 I was very young when I became pregnant. I was abandoned, became homeless and had no job. Friends and strangers from the neighborhood paid for food and a place for me to stay until I could pay for those things myself. My daughter is 25 yrs old now. I am forever grateful, they saved my life and hers
#119 I had stage 4 metastatic cancer, and had only a few months to live, if I survived the chemo. So I sold my house to make the transition easier for my kisa, and the new owner, an elderly stranger with her own health problems, made me stay in the house and took care of me while I underwent the chemo.
#1 Today I unveiled the Charter for Compassion at a press briefing in Washington, DC. I am amazed to see my wish fulfilled and to see compassion return to a prominent place in the global conversation.
