This just in: The Islamic Society of North America, the largest Muslim organization in North America, announced at its huge convention this weekend that it is committed to implementing the Charter for Compassion. The convention, which is the largest gathering of Muslims in the U.S., brought together a multitude of prominent Muslim, interfaith, and government leaders to discuss pressing issues facing American Muslims today. This year, the convention focused on Muslims' civic engagement, including in the 2012 elections, and interfaith harmony. Karen Armstrong was a keynote speaker at the ISNA Community Service Luncheon.
Also during the convention, The ADAMS Center (All Dulles Area Muslim Society) declared itself the first Compassionate Mosque and has called on other ISNA mosques to do the same. In the near future ISNA will begin building a network of compassionate schools which will educate the leaders for tomorrow in the compassionate ethos; and ISNA Youth has chosen to dedicate four of its Winter Camps to the study and practice of compassion.
Stay tuned for more from the convention and Karen Armstrong.
