34. Elizabeth Smith--Conversations with Trees: Freedom to utter and be heard

34. Elizabeth Smith--Conversations with Trees: Freedom to utter and be heard

 Artist’s Note:

This work was inspired by a time when I felt many opinions which strived for peace were not being heard.  The only listener seemed to be the earth itself and, for me, trees.  The characters I placed between the speaker and the tree, although Chinese characters (for no better reason that I like their form and that, as a written language, it is meaningless to many in the Western world) is senseless and for the most part upside down. This is deliberate—it represents that no matter what you say and how you say it, trees always hear and interpret for the earth.
