Clean water and access to food are some of the simplest things that we can take for granted each and every day. In places like Africa, these can be some of the hardest resources to attain if you live in a rural area. ~Marcus Samuelsson
Creating and Developing Awareness
The United Nations General Assembly recognized “the human right to water and sanitation and acknowledged that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realisation of all human rights” through Resolution 64/292 adopted 2010.
On the UN page it lists the following facts about water and sanitation:
- In the rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of people share domestic water with animals or rely upon unprotected wells
- In Asia and Africa, the average distance women walk to get water is 6 kilometers
- Average water use in most countries in Europe range from 200-300 liters per day while in countries like Mozambique people average 10 liters a day
- More than 884 million people live at least 1 kilometer from a water source
- Close to half the people in developing countries are suffering from health related issues associated with poor water and sanitation conditions
- Unclean water and poor sanitation conditions is the world’s second leading killer of children
- In Tajikistan almost a third of the population take their water from canals and irrigation ditches
