The Zen Circle Retreat Series gives practitioners the opportunity to enter into a time of retreat, learning, meditation practice, and special programs within the Circle that are led by Zen teachers. Guests participate with Upaya’s residential community and must follow their daily schedule (distributed upon arrival).
The July Zen Circle is threaded by Upaya’s Sensei Joshin Byrnes and Sensei Genzan Quennell. Faculty from the programs included within each Zen Circle teach onlytheir specific retreat. See below.
Each Zen Circle has an opening night session that includes an orientation as well as meditation instruction in the morning of the first full day. The schedule includes daily meditation practice, samu (work practice) periods, interviews with teachers, weekly dharma talks and seminars, liturgy training, and Zen studies. Typically, there are two personal practice days each week (Monday & Tuesday) when guests and residents have the freedom to hike, study, do laundry, take quiet time, and meditate at their own discretion. On Personal practice days we do not prepare meals. Everyone is responsible for their own meals and may go into town or have left overs.
Faculty for specific programs during the July circle include: Roshi Enkyo O’Hara, Sensei Kaz Tanahashi, Roshi Joan Halifax, Sensei Joshin Byrnes, and Sensei Genzan Quennell.
