"I've been thinking about grit as a character trait ever since we decided on the theme for this year's Gala; Architects of Justice. Say "grit" and my mind immediately goes to the Charles Porter classic novel, True Grit with its infamous lines, "There is nothing free except the Grace of God. You cannot earn that or deserve it." While Porter's protagonist, Mattie Ross, sought retribution for the murder of her father, exemplifying one aspect of grit, the Charter's Humanitarian Awardees each demonstrate a variation of grit beyond perseverance. Each of them has continued to demonstrate a passion for following through on a vision, a vision that is justice. Let me turn to the words of an expert on grit, Angela Duckworth. Her work has earned her a MacArthur Genius Award and her research and application methods are so outstanding that they are both understandable and make perfect sense. Charter for Compassion News, Programs, and Webinars The Texas Compassionate Cities are rallying donations for the Uvalde Love Project. As compassionate cities in Texas we have decided to join together to gather donations throughout our networks and combine all the collected donations to represent unity in our support for Uvalde in the wake of the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting on May 24, 2022. Please donate right away. We'd like all donations by November 30, 2022 or before! Then, we will provide all the collected funds as of that date to the project. Learn more here to donate!
The Compassion Tree Project is not only about planting 7.7 billion indigenous trees – each tree representing each person on the planet - it’s also about re-greening our communities with other native plants, especially pollinator species as well as plants that provide food and medicinal benefits to the local residents. Islands of Calm Meditation for City, Town, Village with Integral City Meshworks Integral City Meshworks offers a Zoom Islands of Calm Meditation for Compassionate Cities once a month on the 4th Saturday. After the meditation participants can (optionally) share their experience of the meditation. This is always delightful and valuable as we get a sense of the energies we are collectively noticing and sharing in the Field of our villages and cities. Altogether the meditation lasts for an hour embracing the check-in, meditation and checkout. The Community of Mindful Parenting aspires to empower families to become more mindful and compassionate. They are a multigenerational, multicultural and fully inclusive community that strives to nurture powerful relationships between parents/caregivers and their children. Their Listening Mothers™ and Finding Calm classes explore the relationship between caregiver and child through a lens of self compassion.
