"Your Children are Not your Children"
by Marilyn Turkovich

Your children are not your children

They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself

They come through you but not from you

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you

You may give them your love but not your thoughts

For they have their own thoughts

You may house their bodies but not their souls

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow

Which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams

You may strive to be like them

But seek not to make them like you

~Khalil Gibran

During this holiday season, regardless of which holiday is observed, be it Hannukah, Christmas, or Kwanza, or even holidays that have passed, Eid and Diwali, children love and are often a focus in these celebrations. As Gibran implies, in his memorable verse from The Prophet, children are the future. It is our responsibility as adults to provide the love, security, and opportunities they need so they may explore their own thinking and doing. For they in turn will be making decisions that will affect not only their own generation, but future generations as well, not to mention our own age group.

In September and most recently in December, we worked with the Foundation of Peace and Compassionate Leadership to begin a new program, Youth Collaborating for Compassion (YCC)... Continue reading here.
