Your children are not your children They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself They come through you but not from you And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you You may give them your love but not your thoughts For they have their own thoughts You may house their bodies but not their souls For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow Which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams You may strive to be like them But seek not to make them like you ~Khalil Gibran During this holiday season, regardless of which holiday is observed, be it Hannukah, Christmas, or Kwanza, or even holidays that have passed, Eid and Diwali, children love and are often a focus in these celebrations. As Gibran implies, in his memorable verse from The Prophet, children are the future. It is our responsibility as adults to provide the love, security, and opportunities they need so they may explore their own thinking and doing. For they in turn will be making decisions that will affect not only their own generation, but future generations as well, not to mention our own age group. The Charter for Compassion has done some heavy lifting this year in preparation for our approach to serving the next generations. In 2023, you will see a continuation of programs dedicated to working with youth, as they set their own agenda, for dealing with issues that are central to their own needs. In September and most recently in December, we worked with the Foundation of Peace and Compassionate Leadership to begin a new program, Youth Collaborating for Compassion (YCC)...
