"It's Hard to Look at Desolation"

Thank you, Marilyn, for putting together the history and reminding us—in your blog post about Gaziantep, that yes, we are, and always have been—one. What happens there affects us here. What happens to humanity there, hurts our hearts here. Gazantiep is among our earliest Compassionate Cities, as was my city—Appleton, in Wisconsin. A sister city, if you will. We are Gazantiep.
The death toll from the earthquake stands now, almost a week, later, at 33,000, and there was a 4.6 aftershock today. This heaped upon a decade of war in Syria! Sixty percent of the infrastructure was already damaged before the earthquake. How much tragedy can be heaped upon a people without them completely collapsing? What more can occur that obliterates the human spirit? How much can a human being/s stand? Continue reading here.

Introduction to Compassionate Listening: Bringing the Light of Compassion to a Conflicted World with Kathleen Coyne, PhD
This 6-week Course begins March 13, 2023
Now, more than ever, our world desperately needs compassion. And we especially need it in our families and communities. You are invited to join us for a highly interactive, experiential, and inspiring introductory workshop on Compassionate Listening. Compassionate Listening offers an opportunity to practice radical compassion in our day-to-day lives. Based on the work of the Compassionate Listening Project, compassionate listening is a practice that invites us to listen with an ‘ear of the heart’ to those around us, particularly those we may not agree with. In our highly divided world, the possibilities for conflict are ubiquitous and the damage is often personally painful and seemingly irreparable. In many cases, people who are most vulnerable are those who are most impacted. Global Read

Cultivating Compassion
Second Session, Thursday, February 23, 5 pm PST / 8 pm EST
How is it that we wind up alienated from one another? Following his curiosity about this very question led Marshall Rosenberg to identify four things: moralistic judgments, refusing to take responsibility for ourselves, making demands, and thinking, “who deserves what.” We do these things to ourselves and to the people around us, bringing disconnection and isolation. Nonviolent Communication points the way toward more connection with ourselves and others with a language of life
The Community of Mindful Parenting aspires to empower families to become more mindful and compassionate. They are a multigenerational, multicultural, and fully inclusive community that strives to nurture powerful relationships between parents/caregivers and their children. Their Listening Mothers™ and Finding Calm classes explore the relationship between caregiver and child through a lens of self-compassion. Their weekly Communi-Teas are a centering tool for meditation. Learn more here.
