Tracking Compassion in America: The Launch of the Muhammad Ali Index

The spirit of Muhammad Ali, renowned not only for his prowess in the boxing ring but also for his enduring commitment to compassion and justice, lives on with the launch of the Muhammad Ali Index. Officially unveiled by Lonnie Ali on the NBC TODAY Show.

This groundbreaking initiative is set to redefine how compassion is understood, measured, and practiced across the United States.

The Muhammad Ali Index is more than just a tool—it’s a movement. This innovative project measures compassion in America through a dynamic framework designed to inspire individuals, organizations, and communities to take meaningful action toward a more empathetic society. The Charter for Compassion is proud to be an impact partner in this transformative endeavor.

Compassion in Action: The SKILL Framework

Central to the Muhammad Ali Index is its SKILL framework, which highlights the importance of practicing compassion in daily life. By focusing on intentionality, self-awareness, and the ripple effects of compassionate actions, the framework provides a roadmap for individuals to create positive change in their communities.

As Lonnie Ali shared during the launch, “Muhammad always believed in the power of compassion to transform the world. This index is a testament to his legacy, and it calls on each of us to carry that torch forward.”

The Ali Compassion Summit and 2025 Report

Coinciding with the launch, the inaugural Ali Compassion Summit took place on January 16, 2025 in New York City. The event brought  together thought leaders, changemakers, and global citizens to discuss the importance of compassion in addressing today’s most pressing challenges. In attedance were representatives of compassionate cities; Leann Rubenstein and Iyabo Onipeda, co-directors of Compassionate Atlanta, former mayor, Greg Fisher from Compassionate Louisville, Eric Costello and Migdalia Garcia from Compassionate San Antonio and Joy and Jon Ramer representing the Compassion Games and Compassionate Seattle.  Also, in attendance was the Charter's E.Dl.  The event was moderated by former Charter Board of Trustee member who is also the lead on the Ali Index,3

The 2025 Compassion Report, another milestone of the initiative, delves into the state of compassion in America. This report not only provides valuable insights but also celebrates individuals and organizations that embody the essence of Ali’s legacy.
