September: Compassion in Traditional and Human Security

In honor of International Day of Peace, this month’s theme is respect, safety, and dignity for all.

sarahSpeaker: Sarah Williamson, Executive Director, Protect the People
Ms. Williamson is the Executive Director of Protect the People (PTP). Ms. Williamson has over 20 years of experience in the humanitarian sector, leading teams in complex emergencies and advising United Nations agencies, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). She has managed programs for refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) along the borders of Afghanistan-Pakistan, Kenya-Somalia, and Thailand-Burma and responded to major disasters such as the Southeast Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the Haiti earthquake. She holds a Master of Studies in Forced Migration from Oxford University and a B.A. in International Relations, African Studies, and French from Gordon College.

Dr. Robert Zuber is director of UN-based Global Action to Prevent War and the Project for a UN Emergency Peace Service. He also serves as consultant, adviser or board member to a wide variety of non-profit, policy and educational organizations, including Green Map System, Our Humanity in the Balance, and the Paris-based human rights organization FIACAT. Based in Harlem and educated at Yale and Columbia Universities, he has written and spoken extensively on diverse human security issues and has organized workshops and conferences in over 25 countries on topics from small arms proliferation and civilian protection to women's participation in peace processes and peacekeeping reform.
