Expanding our compassion footprint to other animals as well as people is good for everyone, according to eminent ecologist and evolutionary biologist Professor Marc Bekoff. The author of 25 books on animal behaviour and emotions spoke with Katrina Fox via Skype on the eve of his trip to Australia to speak on a panel organised by the University of Technology Sydney’s Centre for Compassionate Conservation.
Marc Bekoff is Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, a Fellow of the Animal Behavior Society and a past Guggenheim Fellow. An ambassador for Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots program for young people, his main areas of research include animal behaviour, cognitive ethology (the study of animal minds), behavioural ecology, and compassionate conservation.
Bekoff has also published extensively on human-animal interactions and animal protection, along with over 800 essays (popular, scientific, and book chapters) and 25 books. His work has been featured in international media and he pens a column for Psychology Today journal.
