Ballina Region for Refugees (BR4R)

Ballina Region for Refugees (BR4R) is a community-based and volunteer-managed organization in regional New South Wales. BR4R is a member of the national Rural Australians for Refugees network. BR4R is dedicated to promoting and advocating for the rights of refugees and those seeing asylum in Australia, by thinking globally and acting locally.

BR4R organizes street rallies, vigils, letter writing campaigns and talks to raise awareness.as well as to promote fundraises to provide financial and material assistance for refugees and those seeking asylum in on-shore and off-shore detention and in the community. BR4R also hosts a homestay program, welcoming Australian-based refugees, people seeking asylum and their families.

BR4R has joined Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia to support refugees to settle in regional Australia. This support will include assisting with housing, employment, education, access to social services, and social integration.

The BR4R Seeking Asylum Poetry Prize. opened in 2018. With the support of Dr Emma Doolan, Southern Cross University, the first competition was launched during Refugee Week in 2019, with the theme of Seeking Asylum. Ruth Henderson, the President for Ballina Region for Refugees, reads out the winning poem, home is a poem by Scott-Patrick Mitchell.
