G.E.M.S. (New Rochelle, NY, USA)
Girls Empowered and Motivated to Succeed
G.E.M.S. is a nonprofit agency providing mentoring programs for middle and high school young ladies in the United States. The program will form partnerships with local school districts and the juvenile court system. G.E.M.S.'s mission is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Only through personal relationships can a sense of individual responsibility be reestablished that will give youth the commitment to follow through on the path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
More girls are living in poverty and low-income households today than ten years ago. This is significant because these low socioeconomic-status (SES) girls face considerable challenges that affect their health, happiness, and achievement.
In 2014, GEMS most lived in single-parent families in Florida (56 percent), New York (45%), and Georgia (45%). In 2015, one in five GEMS (19%) ages 12 to 15 lived in poverty. In 2015, 41 percent of GEMS ages 12 to 17 lived in low-income families. These rates are well above the national average (32%) and are highest for Hispanic/Latina girls (61%), black/African American girls (58%), and American Indian girls (61%).
Registration is open! Enroll your daughter today into her future. Where she will be surrounded by a group of girls that will grow as they are empowered and motivated to succeed. Then, through your social media and email, encourage friends to join this global conversation between the genders: ugc.idp.intermix.org.
Suggested topics: Please feel free to set your own topic. A gender related topic is very appropriate, but it is OK to write about something else. Possibilities: the global roles of women and men, violence against women, Convention on the Elimination of all Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the possibility of a Fifth World Conference for Women (5WCW), expanding the scope of the Women's Movement, how to bring in the men, and so forth. You might ask Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka a question, or encourage her. The field is wide open. If you have any thoughts about steps we can take towards human unity, please share

by Peter Gabel
Peter Gabel is editor-at-large of Tikkun and the author of The Bank Teller and Other Essays on the Politics of Meaning (available at tikkun.org/store).
Like a rose that has sprouted in a weed garden and induced the weeds to back away in awe, the restorative justice movement has entered American legal culture and is posing an important challenge to core assumptions about human beings and about the very nature of human reality that our legal culture has taken for granted for more than two hundred years.
The United States itself was founded on a principle of human freedom that presupposed an inherent antagonism between self and other, a belief that the essential meaning of liberty was that we need to be protected against other people. This Fear of the Other was in part a rational response to the religious, social, and economic persecution that had in part characterized previous historical forms of social life, but it also introduced its own distortion into our liberal social fabric: it gave rise to a conception of social being that conceived of human beings as socially separated “individuals” who might form voluntary relationships with others through love, or through contracts, or through voluntary religious and civic organizations, or through democratically elected governments with strictly limited powers, but who at bottom needed always to hold in reserve the memory that the other posed a threat to one’s liberty and who therefore required a binding legal culture that placed “the rights of the individual” above all other social goods.
Implicit in this worldview has been the conviction that we are not inherently connected beings whose fulfillment comes through our mutual recognition of one another, through the inherent bond of our social nature that is completed through the embrace of love and solidarity, but rather that we are cast into the world as disconnected monads who only come into relation after the fact of our individual incarnations, with the borders between us being in need of constant policing to make sure that the seduction of trust never leads us to let down our guard. While we might “voluntarily” engage in any foolish de- pendency on the other that we choose, the law is always there to guarantee “as a matter of law” that nothing actually binds us except our mutual and solemn commitment to our everlasting ontological separation.
What if Lady Justice were omnipartial? A new legal culture based on empathy and care might inspire a better use for that blindfold of hers.
Liberty as Spiritual Separation in American Law
As you read this from within your own private space, as you float through the solitude of your day, consider how the institutions of American law condition and envelop you in the spiritual prison of your separation. You are a citizen in a democracy, but the most fundamental right that defines that democracy is the “secret ballot” rather than a process expressive of any communal bond that unites us. You are legally bound to all others through a “constitution” that protects you against, and therefore affirms the constant threat of, infringement on your right to freedom of speech, of religion, of association, and your right to be protected against others searching your house or making you quarter soldiers or taking away your guns ... but that binding constitution affirms nothing about our connection to one another and therefore offers no commitment to makingsure that our social connection will be realized through our legal process. The substantive law of property guarantees that we can own separate land parcels and exclude others from those parcels, but affirms no binding obligation to share the land, or the food that it produces, or the shelters that we construct upon it. The law of contracts guarantees our freedom to enter binding agreements with others, but in a social context that assumes we are competitors in a marketplace whose goal is to get the benefit of our bargains, rather than “cooperators” whose intention is to realize ourselves through mutual fulfillment and shared objectives. Tort law assures we are protected against others who might pull a chair out from under us as we sit down to the dinner table, or intentionally or negligently harm us on highways or in the operating room or through the consumer goods we buy in their stores, but it does not affirm that we have any duty to care for each other, to rescue each other if we are in distress, or to otherwise act in accordance with a bond emanating from our common humanity. Under the law of corporations, shareholders are assumed to be anonymous investors seeking as discrete individuals to maximize their short-term profits and to be bound to each other solely by that goal, rather than to be socially responsible beings united by a corporate aspiration that will further the well-being of the community or the planet. And finally there is the criminal law, which understands social violence of all kinds as freely chosen individual acts against the state calling for punishment of the individual actor rather than as social acts expressive of distortions within an inherently social fabric that call for repair of the social fabric itself.
The conviction that we can only be bound by our separation and not by our connection is reflected not only in the substance of law, but also in our forms of legal reasoning and our embodied legal processes themselves. We have learned to equate “due process” with the adversary system, which defines conflicts as contests between opponents who cannot trust each other to tell the truth and who therefore have every right to tear each other down through cross-examination even if one believes the other side is telling the truth. Each side in the gladiatorial combat is encouraged to aggrandize the correctness of his or her own position, to never admit weakness or doubt or frailty for fear of undermining one’s case, and to demean and minimize the other side ... because that is the only way to absolutely guarantee that no one in the proceeding— neither judge, jury, nor one’s adversary—will be taken in by misplaced trust. Evidence is limited to empirical proof of hard facts, past human experiences emptied of feeling and presented as mere observed behaviors, subject to relentless testing for misperception or hearsay, because “allowing in” the meaning and feeling of past events would be inherently subjective and could not be trusted to be presented or heard without bias and distortion. And hovering over the entire proceeding are the rules, with justice being defined as accurate application of the rules to the facts according to an analytical form of legal reasoning—the clever product of the much venerated “legalmind”—that excludes compassion or empathy or care or the aspiration to a world based on love and understanding, and instead valorizes logic and “common sense,” the common sense of a world based on individual self-interest and perception of the other as a stranger whose interests clash with rather than complete our own.
The Genius of the Liberal Legal Framework and the Harm Created By It
As unflattering a portrait as I have painted here of our inherited legal culture, we cannot but recognize the genius that animates it and that unifies all its elements. If one wished to construct a binding image of the social world that would maximally protect the individual against all of the possible evils of subjection to the other that have occurred throughout history—slavery, serfdom, the burning of millions of women at the stake for heresy and witchcraft, cruel and unusual punishments like drawing and quartering or the stockades, every form of demonization through superstition, projection, and magical thinking—the generations that preceded ours did a remarkable job of inventing a system of justice that was alert to the risk of the threat posed by the other at every turn. And we should admire and embrace the equally remarkable accomplishments for which this commitment to individual liberty has been in significant part responsible—the partial overcoming of the inherited social hierarchies of the aristocracy, and more recently of racism, sexism, and, increasingly, homophobia by gradually eliminating as a matter of law the legitimacy that these stereotypes and negative judgments could formerly claim. While the liberal revolutions of the late eighteenth century could not directly address and overcome the causes of these forms of social injustice because their own worldview recognizes only the rights of socially separated individuals rather than the need for a legal culture and process to heal the social distortions of an inherently socially connected, interhuman universe, it is nonetheless true that the historical affirmation of the dignity of the individual that was born in the Enlightenment and became binding on us one to the other at the end of the eighteenth century has made an immense contribution to our autonomy from the church, the state, inherited caste systems, and all other ways that exploitation and domination by the other had previously been legally justified.
Yet as we now look out at and live within the envelope of the world we have thus created, we must come to realize by a kind of evolution or enlightenment—by “waking up”—that the liberal framework, the framework of separation, is not only inadequate but harmful. It is harmful because it mischaracterizes a hopeful, potentially loving, potentially mutually confirming and anchoring collective destiny as a destiny of solitudes. And because the liberal worldview is not merely a matter of opinion, but is made binding through law on all citizens, it forms a kind of constant unconscious backdrop that others are receding away from us, that we must pursue our own self-interest, protect ourselves, and endure the pathos of our lives and deaths as solitary beings. Still more, because we in reality are not solitary beings but beings animated by the longing for mutual recognition, affirmation, and love, the liberal worldview inevitably generates a kind of chronic social paranoia that results from the contradiction between the interhuman truth of our social nature and the social message that the other cannot be trusted. As a way of “mediating” this contradiction, of trying to satisfy the need for connection with others in a social world in which others are presented as a threat to our individual safety and integrity, many of us are drawn to grandiose, imaginary collective identities of perfect unity (the Nation, God, the Family, the Gang) accompanied by demonization of other groupings who become the repository of our fear of nonrecognition and humiliation that our own longing for love, acceptance, and recognition will be rejected rather than reciprocated. In this way, the liberal paradigm actually tends to create and recreate the very forms of unfreedom and inequality that in its conscious aspect it seeks to delegitimize and eradicate. Thus as Dr. Seuss suggests in The Butter Battle Book, in the world as it is we may use legal means to eliminate racism, sexism, and other traditional forms of demonization only to turn to dividing the world between those who butter their bread on one side and those who butter it on the other.
Transcending Liberalism: A New Vision of Legal Culture
So as much as we support the great accomplishments of the liberal revolutions and as much as we should continue to fight for the remaining liberal gains not yet won (like the right to gay marriage) within that past and passing paradigm, we need also to support the transcendence of that paradigm toward a new vision of law and legal culture that seeks to foster empathy, compassion, reconciliation with the other, and the fundamental rediscovery that the other is not essentially a threat, but the source of our completion as social beings.
Along with the remarkable Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, which demonstrated that a legal process can be used in the service of healing even terrible acts
of social violence and which made possible the overcoming of Apartheid without the extensive bloodshed and counter- violence common to prior revolutions, the most significant harbinger of the new paradigm has been the restorative justice movement to which we are devoting this special issue of Tikkun. The critical difference between restorative justice and the liberal model of justice that we have inherited from prior generations is that restorative justice begins by embracing an ideal of justice not as a blind woman deciding without prejudice which of two equal individuals has the better right to be vindicated under the law, but rather Martin Luther King’s ideal of justice as “Love correcting that which revolts against love.” In other words, restorative justice begins with a worldview in which we are already in relationship, and in which our greatest aspiration is to realize the possibility of mutual understanding and acceptance through new spiritually alive legal processes that are designed to try to heal the distortions that have masked that possibility of healing and redemption from us.
As you read about the ways of restorative justice in the essays that follow, with their emphasis on the importance of taking responsibility, performing restitution to those harmed, and aspiring to apology and forgiveness as means of reintegrating broken relationships and sometimes knitting together and repairing whole communities, try to imagine a world in which restorative justice processes are being conducted on a daily basis in the city halls and other major civic buildings in the center of the cities or towns that you live in. Imagine how much this change in the legal culture of your city or town would alter the way you perceive your neighbors and the spiritual and moral character of communities and neighborhoods that surround you. For it is in the public manifestations of restorative justice that its true social impact will be felt: its capacity to establish through public visibility and legitimacy that we are coming to recognize and publicly acknowledge what we have known and longed for all our lives—that we are in this together, that we are not infinitely and eternally separated by what divides us, and that while acknowledging and respecting the contributions to us of our forefathers (or, if you like, our “founding fathers”), we can risk leaving them behind.

Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation (Glencree, Wicklow, Ireland)
Glencree believes in a shared world where different communities live in cohesion; where human rights are protected; where diversity and different identities are cherished; where all can live free from the fear of violence, abuse and with dignity and respect; and where differences and conflicts are transformed peacefully and used to build shared and better futures for all.
Glencree’s mission is to help deepen reconciliation within and between communities on the island of Ireland and in selected contexts internationally. Glencree focuses on dealing with the legacies of violence, building peaceful and shared futures and transforming violent conflict. Glencree achieves its mission by helping the transformation and building of relationships through facilitated inclusive dialogue and capacity building of stakeholders.
Core to Glencree’s approach is facilitated dialogue aimed at bringing about new understandings, providing the opportunity to explore new possibilities and transforming problematic relationships. To help ensure greater understanding and open communication between the grassroots, civil society leaders and policy makers Glencree adopts a multi-level approach focusing primarily on civil society. This does not exclude however bringing in political actors if the context dictates this to be necessary.
To support its dialogue and relationship building work Glencree also helps to build people’s capacity to engage in what is often very challenging dialogue work. Glencree offers education and training to empower leaders, emerging leaders, communities and individuals to be better able to dialogue and interact effectively with the ‘other’, thereby facilitating their contribution to deeper reconciliation.
Finally, given our belief that all have to be involved to find sustainable solutions to violent conflict, Glencree makes deliberate efforts, when appropriate and the timing is right, to include those on the margins of a conflict – those who, for whatever reasons such as their socio-economic situation, ethnicity, past behaviour, ideological or political position or gender, find themselves excluded and dismissed.

Global Community, Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN, USA)
About the authors, we call ourselves “Global Community-Minnesota”. For 27 years our small close-knit group has been meeting twice a month to discuss important issues and support one another in our individual chosen work. We stay away from telling others what they “should” do. The resources we pull together are used as grist material for our reflection so that we might choose more wisely on what it is we EACH want to do, if anything.
As Martin Luther King said in March of 1976, “we must learn to survive together as brothers, or we will all perish together as fools.” What will it take to stop the senseless wars, the destruction of the natural world, and the demise of humanity? It seems overwhelming to do anything about these trends, but we must. Our hope is that this site will help all of us in choosing more effective ways of serving a life-giving purpose.
Our best to you in this serendipitous, synchronous “Dance for Life!”

Global Peace Initiative of Women (New York City, NY, USA)
The Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW) was founded by a group of women religious and spiritual leaders to provide a global platform through which women and men, working in partnership, can foster the spiritual values of global unity, peacebuilding and the development of all the peoples of the world. GPIW is an international network of women and men who come together to tap our collective spiritual wisdom to stimulate reconciliation and healing in areas of conflict and post-conflict, and to deepen understanding of oneness, compassion and the principles of ahimsa (non-harm) as central tenets of life. We believe that a shift in consciousness is needed, a change in heart and mind, if we are as a global community to meet the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, poverty and hunger, violence and conflict. Central to our work is the belief that the feminine qualities of wholeness, inclusion, and integration have a vital role to play in facilitating this shift and bringing greater balance to our world. Thus we make great effort to draw upon the resources of women spiritual leaders as we seek to empower these vital qualities.
Global Spirituality (Zurich, Switzerland)
By spreading a global spirituality, a spirituality that transcends and includes (but does not compete with) the past and present religions and spiritual traditions, this project wants to contribute to join humans in a global family.
Eight representatives of different religious and spiritual traditions have come together to write an "Invitation to Global Spirituality." An association supports them in sharing and spreading the message, creating an open space for discussion, and developing the project further, so that Global Spirituality becomes visible in the lives of many people around the globe.
We have the ability to become global citizens in thoughts, words and actions so that we can work together for peace, justice and sustainability. A world culture of respect, compassion and solidarity can emerge and reshape the planet into a place of wisdom and beauty, harmony and love.

- Raise awareness of research results, methods and approaches

These are the values that matter to us:
Compassion. This is the primordial virtue that drives both what we do andhow we do it. It is a value we share with our clients, whose mission is to eradicate poverty and hunger and to protect the environment in the developing world. It is also the value held by the world’s major spiritual traditions and embraced by the new socially minded businesses of the 21stcentury. Compassion is what we seek to practise anyway – whether or not it suits our material interests. Green Ink has signed the Charter for Compassion (http://charterforcompassion.org) and encourages its clients and suppliers to do so too.
Three other core values express how we do our work:
- Empathy. We aim to have a strong focus on the needs of others, especially our clients and colleagues. We try to tune in to their needs and respond to them – both their expressed needs and the ones they are less aware of.
- Expertise. This is the central value that matters to our clients. We are experts in science communication, enabling us to develop high-quality products and offer high-quality advice. And we specialize in agriculture and natural resources R&D, so we understand the issues and topics addressed by our clients.
- Enjoyment. We bring enjoyment to our work because it’s creative, serves good causes, and involves friendly and interesting colleagues and clients. We aim to attract and retain staff who enjoy being part of our team. We aim to give our clients an enjoyable time working with us, so that they come back for more.

Hakshava NGO (Meona, Israel)
Council is the practice of speaking and listening from the heart. Through compassionate, heartfelt expression and empathic, non-judgmental listening, Council inspires a non-hierarchical form of deep communication that reveals a group's vision and purpose.Council offers effective means of resolving conflicts and for discovering the deeper, often unexpressed needs of individuals and organizations. Council provides a comprehensive means for co-visioning and making decisions in a group context. Council is about our personal and collaborative story.
The non profit organization in Israel was established by two elders: Ronit Rinat, who came to Israel with the vision of bringing the council into the education system, so council will welcome each child every day at school, and Leon Berg from Los Angeles, who brought council to Israel and Palestine as a path to peace. Ronit and Leon had many partners both in the U.S. and in Israel who helped create Amutat Maagal Hakshava. We are grateful to them all.
Recognizing the need for speaking and listening from the heart allow for the expansion into non formal educational systems, social organizations, businesses, hospitals, local councils, Para medical workers, among others.
To mention some of our activities – all over the country we bring council into schools for specific group of students. In Ma’Ayanot a school in Kibutz Cabri, the Way of the Council is practiced by the teachers, students and parents already four years creating special atmosphere and improved communication.
The NGO- Amuta gives council facilitator courses for educational staff so they can bring the council to the work with students they are in contact with.
We have on constant basis councils with teachers in different schools to introduce the way of council receiving very positive feedback.
We bring council to create improved communication in “mixed” cities where Arabs and Jews live together. We created a leadership group of Arabs and Jews which work towards a peaceful coexistence.
Our vision expands -through the many councils we have all over the country with different groups of people , ages, genders, religions…
We experience and believe that when the heart speaks and listens miracles happens

Healium Center Foundation (Atlanta, GA, USA)
Our Mission:
To connect, uplift and empower ordinary people with their inner creative.
What we believe:
In a country faced with high rates of depression, drug use and loneliness, how can America become healthy again? Simple. We prescribe an ancient proven healing medicine that exists in all of us; our inner creative. We know it works because we've seen amazing results at our center. Since our inception in 2014, Healium Center has nurtured thousands of ordinary individuals from all walks of life to experience the undeniable power of the arts.
At Healium, our vision is to have a society enriched by a limitless connection with the creative and healing arts. By providing a judgment-free, compassionate and fun environment for adults we have seen transformation in people that is simply priceless. Our unique healing-with-the-arts interactive model has been effective in uplifting and putting more joy and laughter into peoples daily lives. Healium's revolutionary concept works by first deconstructing societal conditioning that art is a childhood activity and/or that requires academic training. These falsehoods paired with judgment and pretense are the main reasons most adults never use art as a wellness regimen; until they discover Healium. By removing the inner critic and activating the inner creative in an individual, we allow each person to 'let loose' in their art activity of choice without any rules. When attending Healium on a regular basis, people have reported; rediscovery of their inner-child, stimulation of dialogue, opening of the mind, healing of past trauma, connecting with loved ones, reduction of anxiety, stress-release, decreased sense of loneliness, reduction in drug use, less depression, improved self esteem and, more inner peace & joy. At Healium, we value authenticity and believe each person is uniquely beautiful with all its perfect imperfections. It is with this honest partnership with each participant that their self-transformation takes place. A less feared individual now dives deeper into the soul. It is with this journey that the individual is able to feel connected, uplifted, empowered and balanced. It is with this metamorphosis of the inner creative that the Healium participant is now healthier and more capable of pollinating the community-at-large with goodness, love and their higher self.

Heights Christian Church (Kent, WA, USA)
Heights Christian Church is part of the Christian Churches, Disciples of Christ, an ecumenical denomination with 3000 congregations across North America. Our congregation consists of approximately 120 members who are diverse in many aspects. When Heights Christian Church was designed, the founding members envisioned a complete facility that not only would serve the church as a place of worship, study and fellowship, but also serve the community. Our building houses many community programs, such as the Cooperative Nursery School, the Shaker Youth Center, the Elegant Flea thrift shop, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In addition, Heights Christian Church donates its facilities for 3-4 weeks each year to the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which temporarily houses and helps place homeless families. In 1985, members of our congregation worked with the City of Shaker Heights and the Department of Housing and Urban Development to develop Campbell Court, an apartment building housing 81 senior citizens in comfortable, affordable surroundings. This continues to be one of our most important ministries outside of the church building, as we still donate our resources and have members serving on the Campbell Court board of trustees.
As a Shalom congregation, Heights Christian Church is open to and affirming of all people, celebrating and finding strength in our diversity and affirming the dignity and worth of every person. We welcome into full membership and participation in the life of the church, per-sons of every gender, race, age, culture, ethnic background, sexual orientation, economic circumstance, and difference in ability. All are welcome as beloved children of God.

If you’re looking for a Catholic community that welcomes everyone to the table, if you’ve been alienated from our hierarchical Roman Catholic structure for any reason, if you’ve been turned away because of your marital status, your gender orientation, or your progressive and egalitarian Vatican II views, or if you’re just curious, please stop by and see if Holy Spirit can be a place for you.

Unfortunately, the United States, one of the most industrialized nations in the world is yet to embrace it along with Iran, Sudan, South Sudan, Tonga and some others. Thirty four years later, in March 2014, Cities for CEDAW Program was launched to implement a CEDAW ordinance in 100 or more cities at the municipal level. In cities where CEDAW ordinance has been passed, it has lowered crimes against children and women. Chances are it may reduce human trafficking and domestic abuse. It also has the potential to decrease income disparity between men and women and increase disposable income for households. Join Orange County, CA residents to bring CEDAW to your City. HopeLines Church (New York, NY, USA)
WELCOME TO THE EVOLUTION OF CHURCH
At HopeLines, we prefer to replace dogma, contradiction, and irrationality with intelligence, awareness, and clarity.
We speak to the essential teachings, the fundamental message, and the pervasive wisdom from the words attributed to the Master Messengers -- Jesus, Siddhārtha Gautama, Mohammad, Confucius, Handsome Lake, Lao Tzu, White Buffalo Calf Woman, The Peacemaker, Zoroaster, Mahavira, Mani, to name a few.
At HopeLines, it is not our aim to defend or offend any particular religion or belief system. Our goal is to personify the Truth through the words of the Masters, and make it our lifestyle and mindset in order to:
- Build and maintain excellent character, as is our birthright.
- Embody active compassion as a celebration of life and living.
- Clarify and awaken the god within and without as both a journey and a destination.
- Reunite the positive with the powerful in us all to actualize our awesome potential.
That's what we do and that's all we do.
With 78% of the American population claiming to be some form of Christian, we use the metaphysical instruction of the Gospel of Matthew during our fellowship. We may also use the Bhagavad Gita, the Gospel of Thomas, the Tao Te Ching, the Qur'an, gnostic books, the Dhammapada, Native American texts, the Zend Avesta, the Wisdom books, and the Kabbala, to name a few. With this in mind,
HopeLines welcomes all and all are welcome

Founded by writer Dina Zaman and her colleague, Nicholas Chan, IMAN is a boutique research outfit that studies how religion impacts studies how religion and perceptions impact multicultural societies using Malaysia as a prime example from the aspects of society, politics and policy, and how faith drives the politics and economics of the country. Inspired Hampers and Gifts (Perth, WA, Australia)
Inspired Hampers and Gifts...
We are a registered business established in 2013 and located in Perth, Western Australia. What we think you’ll like about Inspired:
We’re affordable with hampers and gifts starting from just $25; we deliver Australia wide and can arrange international deliveries
We don’t use props, what you see is what you get and as we want you to know exactly what you’re purchasing, we'll always present all of the product details particularly the size
We offer value for money with durable and reusable items - our products last unlike chocolate, food and alcohol
We offer a 14 day exchange on products and we will pay the postage and handling for the return of damaged/faulty products if it’s our fault, and send a replacement
We support sustainability and incorporate the hamper packaging as part of the gift wherever we can
We support our community through donations to not for profit organisations and research bodies; we also offer heavily discounted products to community agencies
We encourage you to compare our site with others and see for yourself.
How we came about
We could write pages about this but we're sure you're not that interested. In a nutshell, the seed was sewn two years ago when we were searching for a hamper to thank a work referee. All we could find were chocolates and flowers. Although it was very nice, we wanted something a little more. And more recently, while visiting a relative in the Coronary Care Unit for a recent heart attack, we watched as friend after friend were asked to bin their beautiful flowers.
We are surrounded by people who are dieting, watching friends experience illness, divorce and job loss....and have always wondered what we could do, when there was actually very little we could do.
So...we became inspired and started looking around. We noticed that things hadn't changed all that much and chocolate, food and alcohol were still the staple for hampers and gifts. We started looking for those lovely things that you probably wouldn't buy for yourself (or maybe you would!) but would love to receive. We focussed on items that promote self-care, and of course this includes the odd cheeky item that we hope will induce a laugh. And so Inspired Hampers and Gifts was created. We're having fun and we hope you do too....
How we’re giving back
Members of the Inspired Team have worked in the aged care and disability fields for some time and have been touched by cancer, chronic illness and heart disease personally and through family members and friends. We understand the impact of disability and ageing on people and families. We support not-for-profit organisations and research bodies striving to improve our collective health and well-being.
The Inspired Team also recognises the significant contribution individuals in the community make when they donate their time, effort and bodies to a variety of health and well-being related causes to support not-for-profit organisations and research bodies.
The Inspired Team have committed to supporting an individual or group in their quest to raise funds for health and well-being related causes through featuring the individual or group and their cause on this site, linking to their donation page (if applicable) and donating a hamper for raffle or a $1 donation from each sale (whichever is most suitable) to their particular cause. The Inspired Team will support a cause a minimum of four times a year.
The Inspired Team also offers heavily discounted items to not for profit organisations.

We believe the work of bridging the faith divides of our community is not just a “nice” thing to do – it is essential. Interfaith America (Chicago, IL, USA)
There are millions of religious young people in the world interacting with greater frequency. That interaction tends either toward conflict or cooperation. Where so many of these interactions tend towards conflict, the Interfaith Youth Core aims to introduce a new relationship, one that is about mutual respect and religious pluralism. Instead of focusing a dialogue on political or theological differences, we build relationships on the values that we share, such as hospitality and caring for the Earth, and how we can live out those values together to contribute to the betterment of our community.
The Interfaith Youth Core is creating these relationships across the world by inspiring, networking, and resourcing young people, who are the leaders of this movement. We provide young people and the institutions that support them with leadership training, project resources and a connection to a broader movement.

VISION: To foster peace as a consensus value in Cities of Peace around the world.
MISSION: To network, encourage, document, and provide resources and information for leaders and organizations working to make peace a consensus value through the global Cities of Peace movement.
GOALS:
• Network individuals, villages, and cities of peace, internationally.
• Provide an independent, unaligned resource for Cities of Peace.
• Act as a non-polarizing source of information on worldwide peace issues.
• Encourage, honor, and connect peace adherents and organizations.
• Document the history, scholarship, and formation of cities of peace.
• Expand the concept of the American Dream to the World Dream of peace.
Is Your Community an International City of Peace?
Safety, prosperity, and quality of life are the consensus values of Peace around the world. Creating an International City of Peace ensures a sustainable platform for the entire community to begin working toward a culture of peace. Is it time for your community to be a part of this hopeful and practical movement? Hereʼs how.
To create an initiative is very simple and costs no money. You can emphasize the work you are currently doing, or create a new organization for community peace building. We believe that each community has a legacy of peace that can be highlighted, especially in terms of giving hope and encouragement to children and adults alike. We are not a funding organization but individual cities of peace have the option of working with other cities through our Global Family Program.
One person, perhaps you, will be included on our Advisory Council of Leaders. We will make the announcement about your initiative when the following are received:
1. Letter of Intent with signatures (print, get signatures, and scan to return)
2. A vision, mission, and goals statement (as detailed as possible)
3. Photos and captions of local events, locations, or historical events
4. A photo and bio for the leader of the group
5. If possible, a statement about the peace legacy of your community
Please go to our website under “How to Create a City of Peace” to find the Letter of Intent pdf as well as the document Becoming a City of Peace.

International Seminary for Interfaith Studies (New York City, NY, USA)
The International Seminary for Interfaith Studies (ISIS) is created from our twenty years of Interfaith Seminary leadership experience. As we watch the world changing, we realize that what we taught in the past is not enough to deal with the global issues of this time. The world is changing at a rapid rate and there is a shift in the awareness. Future Interfaith Ministers need to be taught in a different way, something more substantial and spiritually grounded is needed. It is time to train Interfaith Ministers, as Gloria Karpinsky puts it, “to minister into the shift of consciousness that is happening on this planet right now.”

Islamic Center of Nashville (ICN) (Nashville, TN, USA)
Part of our mission at ICN is to participate in the general welfare of the of the society through community service. We regularly participate in community service projects: Habitat for Humanity Builds, Second Harvest Food Bank, Red Cross, mobilize walks, fundraising, coat drives, soup kitchens, disaster relief, etc. Every year ICN holds its International Yard & Bake Sale and donates the proceeds to either local mosque projects or community service and charitable events. Also, free monthly Health Fairsare offered by the Nashville Muslim Medical Services. ICN values its relationship with its neighbors: 'Serve God and Associate None With Him. Show Kindness To Your Parents And Kinsfolk, and To The Orphans, To The Needy, To Your Near And Distant Neighbors,...' (Qur'an, Chapter 4, verse 36) Recently, ICN partnered with the Organized Neighbors of Edgehill (ONE) to explore areas of involvement.
Our history: in the mid-1970s, there were very few Muslims in Nashville. Only a handful used to offer Jumu’a prayer (weekly Friday congregation) at the Afro House (now known as the Black Cultural Center) of Vanderbilt University. As time progressed, attendance in Jumu’a prayer gradually grew from 5 to 40 by 1979. At that time, the Nashville Muslims got together and organized themselves for the first time, paving the way for the formal emergence of the Islamic Center of Nashville (ICN).
With a collection of $30,000 and a generous donation from Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) of England, the ICN purchased an old house in 1979 on the corner of Twelfth Ave. and Sweetbriar Street. The community continued to use it as a Mosque until 1989 when the old house was demolished and a new Mosque was built.
The Muslim community of Nashville kept growing at a fast rate throughout the 90’s when we were blessed to have an influx of Kurdish and Somalians move to Nashville. In 1995, the ICN bought a 10.6 acre land on Charlotte Pike near exit 199 off of I-40 West. Development of this land constitutes the core of the present day challenge for this community. Besides the mosque, ICN’s major achievements include the purchase of land for Muslim graveyard, the purchase of land for Muslim Community Complex for a full-time Islamic school, community center and mosque, the establishment of a full-time Islamic school (founded in 1995) as well as a weekend Islamic school, and the launching of many other social, religious and educational activities. On December 1, 2008, the first phase of the new school building was completed and opened, from Pre-K thru 6th grades.
The ICN provides educational opportunities for people of other faiths to learn about Islam. Schools, classes, churches, individuals, institutions, etc. visit our mosque on a weekly basis, as well as our members being regularly invited to speak to groups such as schools, workplace, law enforcement, interfaith, etc. Also, our center prides itself in working towards making our great city of Nashville a better community through community service programs such as Habitat for Humanity, M.S. Walk, Walk as One, etc.
The Muslims in Nashville are well diverse with ethnic representations mainly from Kurdistan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Palestine, Middle East, North Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia and United States, and many others from Yemen, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Oman, Kuwait as well as African countries. Yet, the community is quite cohesive, well organized and closely tied together.
Presently, the greater Nashville community has over 30,000 Muslims and five major mosques in Nashville (Islamic Center of Nashville, Salahadeen Center of Nashville, Masjid Al-Farooq, Islamic Center of Tennessee and Masjid Al-Islam). The greater region includes the Islamic Center of Clarksville, the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, the Islamic Center of Williamson County, the Islamic Center of Columbia and the Masjid Al-Salam Shelbyville.

JEKELY (Berlin, Germany)
In my art events, screenplays and books I refer to important issues regarding compassion and the loss of it in our society. I help by signing petitions, on stage I talk about issues, and together with animal rescuers we try to find new ways of getting the people in touch with things they don't want to see, because it is a large part of reality. A lot of things of our daily life have to do with murder and slavery. I want to promote that the new lifestyle in western Europe should be a natural care about these issues and that it's normal to go on demonstrations, sign petitions and take some free time to help others.

Jewish Voice for Peace (Atlanta, GA, USA)
JVP opposes anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab bigotry and oppression. JVP seeks an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem; security and self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians; a just solution for Palestinian refugees based on principles established in international law; an end to violence against civilians; and peace and justice for all peoples of the Middle East.
Jewish Voice for Peace-Atlanta is a chapter of the national organization of JVP. We are a Jewish organization with many allies working to end the Israeli occupation; as an anti-racist organization we are starting to center the voices of Jews of Color along with Palestinians and other non-Jewish people of color, in the struggle for equality, human rights and freedom---for Palestinians and in ending racism and all other forms of structural oppression. Through education and advocacy, multi-faith, mutli-racial and multi-ethnic coalition building, meetings with members of congress, and campaigns focusing on disrupting the status quo of Israeli occupation, we act in solidarity with Palestinians continuing to struggle for their freedom. We also see the value of building community in order to restore a sense of shared ethical values and humanity. We work to transform the Jewish community, inspired by diverse Jewish values and traditions to work toward social justice, support the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions as a nonviolent strategy to end and resist the occupation; we call for the end to US military aid to Israel until the almost 50 year occupation ends, and we support allies in all of our work for justice.

Johnson Roberts Associates (Somerville, MA, USA)
“All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space” - Phillip Johnson
Libraries. Churches. College Campus Facilities. Schools. Courthouses. Town Halls. Senior Centers.
…How do you design buildings with purpose and beauty, sustainability and suitability for the people who will use them?
We believe that great architecture is about more than harmony of form and function. It’s about more than thoughtful design and close collaboration with clients – which are crucial.
It is a relationship with communities – seniors and children, parents and students, librarians and readers, policemen and politicians. They make a building what it is. Not us.
Since 1996, Johnson Roberts Associates has earned a reputation for architecture that reinforces the sense of place of the community it serves. We strive to create buildings that are appropriate to the context they serve and the people who use them.
Our diverse portfolio includes public libraries, town offices, public safety facilities, court facilities, public and private schools, college and university facilities, churches, and historic preservation and restoration projects.

Karuna Center for Peacebuilding (Amherst, MA, USA)
OUR VISION
Karuna Center for Peacebuilding envisions a just and peaceful world in which difference is a source of creativity and strength.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to empower people divided by conflict to develop mutual understanding and to create sustainable peace.
OUR WORK
Karuna Center for Peacebuilding innovates approaches for transforming conflict across divides by supporting people in all sectors of society to discover their shared capacity for building peace.
Through dialogue and collaborative projects, we work with local partners to heal the destructive divides that are left in the wake of violence and threaten future stability. Those who have been separated by war or injustice discover their common aspirations. By creating strategic multi-sector relationships, our local partners form alliances to advocate for policy changes that will ensure inclusive participation and prevent future violence. Our approach is always context specific. It develops new skills while building on local strengths and local culture.
Since our founding in 1994, we have implemented multi-year peacebuilding programs and offered trainings and consultancies in over 25 conflict-affected countries. Working in partnership with in-country organizations, the Karuna Center leads programs specifically designed to develop local capacity to address ongoing challenges and to enhance a healthy civil society capable of supporting viable democratic institutions and sustainable economies. We offer training and peacebuilding programs in English, French, and Spanish.
OUR APPROACH
Building Local Capacity - Karuna Center programs are developed in response to requests from in-country groups or organizations. We maximize the building of local capacity to develop local solutions to local problems. We engage those who will have the broadest and most significant impact in their sectors or communities and collaborate with them to design programs that are specifically suited to the local context.
Conflict Transformation – Our programs explore the interweaving of social, political, and economic factors that contribute to conflict, recognizing that conflict transformation requires both individual and systemic change. Our trainings are practical and experiential. They engage participants in analyzing the root causes of conflict, identifying strategic opportunities for intervention, and building skills for conflict resolution and prevention. At the same time we make sure that our approach fits with local culture and respects the needs of those deeply impacted by violence and trauma. Guidance and mentoring in participant-led peacebuilding projects provides opportunities to put theory into practice and learn from challenges as they emerge.
Dialogue - Central to the work of Karuna Center is the skillful use of facilitated, structured dialogues. People who have become alienated from or dehumanized by one another through war or structural violence are able to develop mutual understanding, discover their common aspirations, and find ways to work together.
Sustainable Peace - Our longer-term programs include a "training of trainers" and mentoring in the design and delivery of peacebuilding training and projects. Former participants of Karuna Center programs not only bring social healing to their communities, but also facilitate dialogues and teach peacebuilding skills throughout their countries. Many go on to found local peacebuilding entities that remain Karuna Center partners.

Keys to Peace (Tavernier, FL, USA)
Keys to Peace is a grassroots non-profit organization that is aimed at building awareness and promoting practices of peace through education and social connection in the Florida Keys.
We act as a catalyst to peace. Our mission is to create a more compassionate, peaceable, and sustainable Florida Keys community through education, affiliation, and innovation. We believe that a peaceful community is committed to relationships based on acceptance, respect, tolerance, justice, and dignity.
We offer opportunities for people to choose projects where they can use their gifts and graces to participate in activities that help create peace. From strengthening spiritual and emotional well-being to building lasting social connections, all of our events and efforts strive to educate and inspire others to join together to help create a more peaceful and compassionate community.
10 Keys to Peace
1. BE HERE NOW: Keep your attention in the present moment. Being upset about the past and worrying about the future are self-defeating.
2. FORGIVE: We do not forgive because we "should" or because someone deserves it. We forgive to free ourselves from the bondage of resentment. Die to the past every moment. Live this moment fully.
3. OBSERVE: Notice your thoughts. Which ones make you upset? Which ones make you feel better? Remember, you can choose your thoughts.
4. FOCUS: Focus on thoughts that help you feel better. You can be master of your own mind.
5. QUESTION: Often, thoughts that upset you are not true. They are beliefs you have carried with you from the past. Question thoughts and beliefs. Can you see things differently?
6. MEDITATE: Practice quieting your mind. Make a connection to your Higher Self (Higher Power, God, Universal Energy).
7. REMEMBER: Remember your True Self. You are not your thoughts. Remember the awareness behind the inner thinker.
8. LISTEN: Listen to your inner Voice. It is the voice that guides you, comforts you, and gives you strength.
9. SURRENDER: Accept what is. Release all resistance to what is. What we resist will persist. Breathe. When we accept life the way it is, we find peace.
10. EXPECT: Expect positive results.

Kites for Peace (Puerto Princesa, Philippines)
A GLOBAL CALL BY CHILDREN TO END ARMED CONFLICT IN THEIR GENERATION
“Children are both our reason to eliminate the worst aspects of armed conflict and our best hope of succeeding in that charge.” — Graça Machel, Humanitarian and author of the 1996 UNICEF Report on the Impact of Armed Conflict on Children
In 2011, thirteen thousand children from Gaza taking part in the United Nations’ Relief and Works Agency’s Gaza Summer Games beat the world record for the largest number of people flying kites simultaneously. It was a beautiful day at the beach with almost every colour of the rainbow painting the sky.
Over the last few weeks, hundreds of children have died in the current battle between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Some of these children may have been those who flew their kites on that beach one sunny day. Today, the world grieves knowing they will no longer fly their kites and we watch in horror as the numbers of children dying continue rising.
Kites for Peace is a continuation of this earlier kite-led initiative in the backdrop of the June 2014 escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas. It is a creative response to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East that has displaced and killed so many children. It not only speaks for the children of Gaza that lost their lives to a war they inherited without having a choice but it speaks for all children living in armed conflict areas around the world.
Our dream is to fly more than 13,000 kites to go beyond the total number that the Gaza children met on that beautiful day in 2011 by November 20, 2014 for the World Day of Prayer and Action for Children which is also celebrated as Universal Children’s Day. It is our hope that by this time, other children in the world that are displaced, traumatised, or wounded from conflict or violence may be able to fly their kites again.
A Creative Response for the Children of Gaza and all Children Affected by Conflict and Violence Around the World.
Dear Friends,
I write with the intention to connect from my heartspace. I have been observing its wave of stillness and movement for the last few weeks as we as a global community bear witness to the increase of violence in the Middle East. I held back because I know I have too many things on my plate right now and I still carry guilt from pausing in peace building work to pursue ecovillage and disaster rehabilitation work. It is only the last 5 days that I made a choice to respond even just in a small way, trusting that this is never my work alone and this plan of action must be open to be shared.
As an artist, vision and imagination are my tools in supporting individuals, communities, and movements in transitioning from crisis into resilience. If we do not hold a vision, then we have forgotten how to trust in our capacity to dream another reality - to believe that our highest nature as humans is to co-create anything into being. Whether it be our own children or our civilisations - the gift of manifesting our personal and collective experience is precious power.
Every day now we are witnessing the number of dying children rising in the Middle East along along with the uncertainty if we will be able to keep to the 2 degrees that would save us from future mass extinction from climate change in the typhoon vulnerable parts of Asia where I live. Even having worked in both post - conflict and post- disaster relief and rehabilitation and the advocacy platforms that "prevent them" through peace building and environmental education, I could honestly say, “Sometimes I feel a little lost with what to do.” Despite this, I trust we are in this great transition where we are facing a question - where are we going and how do we get there?
One of the important stories that I work with in evacuation centres is the butterfly's metamorphosis. As we pick up the pieces of the sudden unexplainable and unforeseen loss of life and property, all we have left that is still intact - is the story of how we survived together. In this temporary time of piecing together remnants of broken parts while rebuilding back in remembrance of our wholeness, we are actually in a very potent space which shamans would refer to as, "to dream the world into being again.”
Like the caterpillar in its chrysalis stage in the cocoon, its old world is dying and it starts dealing with uncertainty. In this uncertainty, all we really have is either to accept that our end has come or to hold on to the idea that something else is in the other end of the darkness.
As an artist in the surviving communities I have worked with, I have been helping co-create spaces for a possible future to be imagined as we move from important emergence-see(ing) and cry-sees. It is with this same seeing that I am inviting you to this simple and collaboratively replicable project into the world today as a response.
In 2011, thirteen thousand children from Gaza flew a rainbow of kites on the beach to break a global record of simultaneous kite flying. This beautiful story of hope and reading about the "miracle" of a baby girl rescued from her 23-year old dead mother's womb after an airstrike in Gaza the last few days have inspired me to conceive "Kites for Peace."
In the last 3 days as I listened to my soul speak just as I have done before when it spoke so loudly that inspired me to design the previous children-led ritual actions that I've co-initiated for the resumption of the peace talks and the signing of the peace agreement between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. My most important learning was to trust even in the small but meaningful action. With this trusting, I seek alignment and resonance with those asking the same questions that birth it. As our question marks meet, we form a heart with the other… and then hopefully another, then another until the circle of shared hearts beating together grows.
“Instead of rockets, what if we let our dreams of peace fly with our kites as we imagine a future that we want?”
This is the dream of Kites for Peace by amplifying the voices of the Gaza children from that beautiful sunny day at the beach with their kites. We will go beyond the 13,000 kites by November 20, Universal Children’s Day wherein we celebrate the World Day of Prayer and Action for Children with a global mass action to end armed conflict and violence in this present generation. Together, we will save more children from being born into war in our lifetime.
I would like to engage you in reading through the preliminary website for this action (you can click on the links) that features
1. the Story Behind the Call http://kitesforpeace.tumblr.com/story and
2. the Global Call to Circle http://kitesforpeace.tumblr.com/call
The action is inspired by restorative practices that engages the human story of transcendence. Should you resonate, the invitation is for everyone to own the call and take part in the circle by working with children in making and flying (a) kite/s
Partnerships may require some shared energy use like requiring young people from the organisation to help in improving and maintaining the site or share specific replicable peace education and child rights platforms. Participating dream weavers may take on their own local action without necessarily needing to be involved in the operations and maintenance of the action. Something beautiful is about to emerge and I want to engage you in the first circle of this birthing process. There will be a lot of changes as more and more people share ideas and that is something welcome in this process.
Currently, we are in partnership with The Charter for Compassion and Unify, with an initial intention to take action by some INGOS which I will mention later. It's still a simple platform for now but I am currently in conversation with other local and global organisations who are now keen to share the circle.
Words cannot describe how it feels to be writing wide awake every time something like this is to be birthed. True to the rhythm of my past actions with children and peace building, this one has been a special conceiving process. One cannot “NOT” do anything but respond not just to the call of my generation, but to the call of my own spirit. Thank you for continuing to co-journey with me and for taking time to share presence with this invitation today. As always, I come in an unconditional space and I am grateful to whatever resonance that circles back.

KUAF Radio (Fayetteville, AR, USA)
KUAF, 88.9FM went on the air in 1973 as a 10-watt student radio station supervised by a faculty member in the Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas. In 1985, a new, commercial station (carrier-current/cable) was built for students at the University of Arkansas and KUAF was changed to a professional public radio station featuring NPR news, classical music, jazz, folk, blues and other public radio programs like Car Talk and A Prairie Home Companion.
Now operating at 91.3FM with a powerful 100,000 watt transmitter, KUAF provides a 14-county area of west and northwest Arkansas, parts of eastern Oklahoma and southern Missouri with the only source of national and international news from NPR as well as a daily local news magazine “Ozarks at Large”. Serving a potential audience of over 600,000 people, KUAF offers classical music during the mid-morning and night time hours and a variety of public radio programs on the weekends.
In 2006, KUAF was the first station in the region to broadcast in HD and developed HD-2 and HD-3 stations which provided even more public service to the area. HD-2 features classical music 24 hours a day and HD-3 is all news/talk with large doses of programming from the BBC.
Owned by the University of Arkansas, KUAF was originally located on campus in a run-down, old house on Duncan Avenue and then in a university owned apartment complex. That complex was demolished in 2010 to make room for a new academic building. By December, 2009, KUAF staff had raised more than $2-million, bought property and built a state-of-the-art radio building off campus, close to the Fayetteville square. Located across the street from the Fayetteville Public Library, at 9 S. School Avenue, KUAF is at the center of the intellectual and artistic hub of northwest Arkansas.
KUAF Mission Statement
KUAF's mission is to be a broadcast leader serving our listening area with programs that challenge, entertain, educate and inform.
