Parliament of the World's Religions (Chicago, IL, USA)

Our Mission:

The Parliament of the World's Religions was created to cultivate harmony among the world's religious and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its guiding institutions in order to achieve a just, peaceful and sustainable world.

To accomplish this, we invite individuals and communities who are equally invested in attaining this goal.

Our Vision:

The vision of the Parliament of the World's Religions is of a just, peaceful and sustainable world in which:

Religious and spiritual communities live in harmony and contribute to a better world from their riches of wisdom and compassion.

Religious and cultural fears and hatreds are replaced with understanding and respect.

People everywhere come to know and care for their neighbors.

The richness of human and religious diversity is woven into the fabric of communal, civil, societal and global life.

The world's most powerful and influential institutions move beyond narrow self-interest to realize common good.

The Earth and all life are cherished, protected, healed and restored.

All people commit to living out their highest values and aspirations.

Our Approach:

The Parliament of the World's Religions seeks to promote interreligious harmony, rather than unity. The problem with seeking unity among religions is the risk of loss of the unique and precious character of each individual religious and spiritual tradition; this understanding is key to our framework.

Interreligious harmony, on the other hand, is an attainable and highly desirable goal. Such an approach respects, and is enriched by, the particularities of each tradition. Moreover, within each tradition are the resources (philosophical, theological and spiritual teachings and perspectives) that enable each to enter into respectful, appreciative and cooperative relationships with persons and communities of other traditions.

Our Opportunity:

We live in a world of difference. Yet, we are interdependent. Nowhere is learning to live with difference more important than religion.

Too often, religion is misused as an instrument for division and injustice, betraying the very ideals and teachings that lie at the heart of each of the world's great traditions. At the same time, religious and spiritual traditions shape the lives of billions in wise and wonderful ways. They gather people in communities of shared beliefs and practices. When these diverse communities work in harmony for the common good, there is hope that the world can be transformed.

Over the years, the Council has initiated dialogues and nurtured relationships among people of difference. In doing so the Parliament has provided a framework for expressing many visions of a just, peaceful and sustainable future. In the process, religious and spiritual communities have discovered a shared commitment to ethical principles.

This shared commitment has opened the way for a new era of cooperative action among the world's religious and spiritual communities as well as civil and political societies. The well-being of the Earth and all life depends on this collaboration.

Paul Ekman Group (San Francisco, CA, USA)

Mission

The Paul Ekman Group seeks to enhance emotional awareness. Building on decades of research, we offer resources to build competency in evaluating truthfulness, improving emotional life and compassionate connection. PEG provides training which facilitates effective communication in professional and personal relationships.

Our Guiding Principles

We believe that effective communication skills are the most important skills in life.

Our training is evidence-based, leavened by real life experience. We err on the side of under- rather than over-representing the benefits.

We seek to maximize usage of our trainings and workshops rather than focusing solely on maximizing profit. We undertake relevant pro bono work. Our training tools are made available to accredited researchers at no cost on a case-by-case basis.

We believe research should have practical application. We offer our training to:

National Security and law enforcement

Health and social welfare institutions

Educational settings

Corporate settings

The general public, families, students, and researchers

We will never conduct evaluations of individuals running for or currently in public office, or in litigation.

History

Dr. Paul Ekman founded the Paul Ekman Group (PEG) when he retired from University of California-San Francisco, where he was a professor for nearly forty years. He wanted to translate his research findings into practical tools that would equip anyone to lead a more skillful emotional life, and to enable those in law enforcement to more accurately evaluate truthfulness. His emotional skills training tools have been used by governments, security organizations, teachers, therapists, physicians, salespeople, nurses, doctors, and corporate executives all over the world. Ekman has personally conducted workshops for the FBI, the CIA, the US Department of Defense, the Counter-Intelligence School, and  the New York Police Department. PEG provides a range of quality-assured Paul Ekman Workshops through Paul Ekman International (PEI) and its network of Licensed Delivery Centers around the globe, making his work more accessible to businesses and individuals. PEG continues to develop online interactive training tools; RE3 (Responding Effectively to Emotional Expressions) and CAP (Charting your Anger Profile) will be available soon.

Peace Trees Vietnam (Seattle, WA, USA)

THIS IS THE FOUNDING STORY OF PEACETREES VIETNAM.

Lt. Daniel Cheney was a US Army helicopter pilot killed during the Vietnam War in 1969. Dan was also a son and brother. His sister, Jerilyn, committed herself to honoring his memory. When relations were reestablished with the country in 1995, Jerilyn and friends realized this commitment by traveling to Vietnam on a mission of peace and compassion.

PeaceTrees Vietnam’s vision to create safe and healthy futures for the children and families of Central Vietnam, beginning first with ensuring that Quang Tri Province, one of the poorest and most war-torn regions of the country, is a safe place to live. Even today, more than 40 years after the war’s end, nearly 85% percent of the land remains unsafe, riddled with landmines, bombs, grenades and other unexploded ordnance.

Healing The Land

PeaceTrees’ work begins with healing the land and making it safe for children to play, farmers to till the soil and families to build their homes. These efforts include clearing the land of unexploded landmines and other ordnance, as well as teaching people to be aware of the threats and enable them to live more safely in the midst of these hazards. On an individual level, PeaceTrees Vietnam recognizes the economic devastation resulting from injuries and death from landmine explosions and provides victims and their families with direct aid and scholarships for children.

Building Community

PeaceTrees Vietnam supports local communities by constructing homes, libraries and kindergartens in partnership with local people.

Planting Futures

PeaceTrees Vietnam is planting futures with the people of Quang Tri province. Making land safe, restoring the environment, and creating new educational and economic opportunities collectively heals the enduring wounds of war that linger for both the Vietnamese and American people. Through PeaceTrees Vietnam, fresh hope is planted, grows, branches and blossoms.

Peak to Peak Rotary Club (Black Hawk, CO, USA)

“Service above Self,” the Rotary motto, guides our thoughts and actions as we strive to provide support and education of lasting value; working to include a hand up rather than just a hand out. Peace and conflict prevention and resolution is a key focus of our work in the world. We endorse the guiding principles of Rotary International which include monitoring what we think, say or do so that these reflect the truth, are fair to all concerned, build good will and better friendships and are beneficial to all concerned.

Although compassion may motivate us to make donations, to award scholarships or to help fund and participate in humanitarian projects in a distant land, it goes a great deal deeper. It springs from the recognition of our connectedness, our interdependence and the understanding that, except for different parents, there are we.

Thus, with compassion and understanding we work give material, educational and spiritual support to others now that we have needed in the past and may need again someday.

The Peak to Peak Rotary Club is part of Rotary International and District 5450, typically thought of as the Denver area, stretching from Breckenridge to the Kansas border. We serve the towns of  Black Hawk, Central City, Nederland and Rollinsville of Gilpin and Boulder Counties along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway.

We have 23 members — community, government and business leaders committed to creating sustainable service projects internationally and locally.  And we’re growing with a new satellite club forming in the town of Nederland. Interested? Then contact us.

Our focus has been serving the youth of our local communities with scholarships, leadership development (through Rocky Mountain RYLA) and local Interact youth service club.  We also support other charitable causes in our local community.

Internationally, we support Shelterbox which supplies shelter, food and warmth to people in areas experiencing natural and human inflicted disasters. Shelterbox often has relief on the ground withing 48-72 hours — days and even months before governments respond.

Peak to Peak Rotary, in cooperation with the Peace Corps and the people being served, installed 100 latrines for an indigenous people in Panama in 2012-13. We are now raising funds for a large, potable water project in Panama.

pedrontheworld (Portland, OR, USA)

Being raised by a single Mother (Dad died, when I was only 8 years old), and experiencing myself the social barriers that one faces when having the tough luck of being born among the less empowered, I've always been eager to make the voices of those who live below the radar of social standards heard.

As of June of 2015, I started a personal project called "Careful: Soul Inside", showcasing lives of real people who, like you and me, had plans and dreams, but for a misfortune of destiny ended up on the streets, subsistence living, or in shelters. "Careful: Soul inside" is a project that envisions
telling the stories of these suffering people and raising society's awareness of the homelessness issue. The idea is simple: I talk to them, hear their stories and register everything on camera. Eventually, whenever allowed, I share these pictures on social networks. My intention is to bring more awareness of, and educate people about the fine line that separates "society" and homeless people, and hopefully to bring down this huge social wall that makes these people practically invisible for most of us.

Hard Facts:

In California:

California has added 21 state prisons in 30 years, with the prison population expanding from 23,000 to 170,000

The California Prison Map shows the location of the 61 federal, state and private prisons

California’s recidivism rate is its 70%—twice the national average

Taxpayers pay $11 billion per year to operate the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

“It costs precisely as much to house, feed and guard one prisoner for one year in a California state prison as tuition, meals and housing cost for a student enrolled for one academic year at Harvard.” –Ted Koppel

The cost per inmate per year is now $49,000

Comparatively little of California’s prison budget goes toward rehabilitation

Poetic Justice Project advances social justice by engaging formerly incarcerated youth and adults in art education, mentoring and the creation of original theatre that examines crime, punishment and redemption. Founded in 2009 by artistic director Deborah Tobola, Poetic Justice Project unlocks hearts and minds with bold, original theatre.

Pomegranate Center (Issaquah, WA, USA)

Pomegranate Center was founded in 1986 by artist and community organizer Milenko Matanovic.

Milenko began his career as an experimental artist in the late ’60s in his native Slovenia, exhibiting all over the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as part of the artist collective OHO. At the age of 24, feeling like his art career was no longer helping to push art-making into everyday life – it was living in museums and private collections – Milenko left the artist collective and began learning how art could serve community better.

When Milenko moved to the United States in 1973, he saw growing suburban neighborhoods filled with traffic, waste and lack of imagination. It is from this concern for the isolating direction of modern communities that Pomegranate Center was founded – to bring the creative process to community problem solving.

Today, Pomegranate Center has developed an effective model for helping communities prepare for the future using collective creativity, meaningful engagement and powerful collaboration. Milenko’s intuition has grown into a vibrant organization working on dozens of projects each year  to bring people together to build better communities throughout the US and around the globe.

Progressive Christian Alliance (Georgia)

Jesus’s central message is about radical inclusion, thus we welcome anyone to participate in our fellowship without judgment or forcing them to conform to our “likeness” or affirm our creeds in order to be accepted. We invite and offer all a place at the table – no exceptions.

Faith is not about concrete answers, religious absolutes, creeds, or dogma. Faith is about the search for understanding, the raising of important questions, the open honesty of having doubt, and the realization that no one has it all completely right nor does any human hold all the answers. We seek to follow the advice found in 1st Thessalonians 5:21, which is to “seek truth out in all things and hold firmly onto that which is good.” Religious absolutes of dogma, legalism, and strict doctrine become stumbling blocks and “litmus tests” for who is “in” and who is “out” of the circle of God’s grace. These false tests that Jesus never required get in the way of truly following Jesus and his teachings.

Following Jesus is counter-cultural, radical, and disrupts the status-quo. The good news of the gospel is intentional in its inclusion of those who are traditionally marginalized and refused by Mainline Christianity.

The words of Jesus found in the gospels – specifically, what he states are the greatest commandments: “Love God with all of your essence and love your neighbor as you should love yourself” – are to be the focus for any disciple of him. We submit the rest of Scripture to the position of “sacred commentary.”

Recognition and affirmation of the differing belief systems of others, whose faiths offer a way into relationship with God and call upon them to further God’s love and grace on the earth, is crucial. Jesus revealed this path in the acts and works of the Gospel According to Matthew, chapters 5-7; and demonstrated this inclusion on many occasions – including in his witnessing and affirmation of the Samaritan woman, whose culture and people were looked down upon for worshipping God in a different way (the Gospel According to John 4:1-42). As Jesus taught and revealed through example, any “spiritual” or “non-spiritual” person adhering to this way of life are indeed furthering the Reign of God and God’s message of radical love and inclusion here on earth. As Jesus said, “Anyone who is for us cannot be against us” (the Gospel According to Mark 9:39-41).

Creating fellowships and communities that are dedicated to lifting up, affirming, and equipping one another for the work the Spirit of God has called us to in Micah 6:8: active peacemaking, striving for justice and equality of all people and nations, loving those who are labeled by our government, society, and – at times – ourselves, as “enemies,” caring for God’s creation, and bringing hope to the poor and poverty-stricken.

God created humans with a brain capable of discovery and reason. God does not require us to “check our brains at the door,” along with our coat and hat in order to be a part of the faith. Faith and Science are not in conflict; they are in harmony. The Bible is not a Science textbook and should never be taken as such. We affirm that if God is truth, then any discovery we make about ourselves, our origins, or the way the universe was created has come from God and should not be viewed as heresy.

The Church is not simply a four-walled institution, but a ministry without walls that surrounds and encompasses everything, everywhere we go. Our brothers and sisters are not only those who label themselves as “Christian,” but are everyone we meet. Ministers and adherents of the Progressive Christian Alliance recognize that their ministry does not begin only when they are behind a pulpit or that their witness is only conveyed through spoken word; but their ministry extends to all places and their witness is conveyed by their actions.

Progressive Christianity (Tacoma, WA, USA)

Progressive Christianity is an open, intelligent and collaborative approach to the Christian tradition and the life and teachings of Jesus that create pathways into an authentic and relevant religious experience.

Do you find more grace in the search for meaning than in absolute certainty, in the questions rather than in the answers?

Do you have religious interests and longings but cannot accept the beliefs and dogmas you associate with Christianity?

Are you repelled by claims that Christianity is the “only way”?

Do you find solace, meaning, or connection to the teachings and the path of Jesus of Nazareth?

Organized religion does not have to be irrelevant, ineffectual, or repressive...

ProgressiveChristianity.org provides guiding ideas, networking opportunities, and resources for progressive churches, organizations, small groups, and individuals that long to craft a life connected to the way of Jesus.

We promote an understanding of Christian practice and teaching that leads to a greater concern for the way people treat each other than for the way people express their beliefs, the acceptance of all people, and a respect for other religious traditions.

We affirm the variety and depth of human experience and the richness of each persons’ search for meaning, and we encourage the use of sound scholarship, critical inquiry, and all intellectual powers to understand the presence of God in human life.

We are opposed to any exclusive dogma that limits the search for truth and free inquiry, and we encourage work that eases the pain, suffering and degradation inherent in many of the structures of society, as well as work that keeps central to the Christian life fair, open, peaceful, and loving treatment of all human beings.

Progressive Christianity Network (Newnham, United Kingdom)

The Progressive Christianity Network Britain (A Registered Charity No 1102164) works to promote and support open and contemporary Christian understanding. We provide a network of local groups across the country, publish a radical quarterly newsletter, and organize regular conferences and events. Members come from all denominations, and we enjoy links with other progressive Christian movements around the world.

The Network recognizes the value and significance of tradition and the scriptures in the shaping of Christian faith. But faith must be of today, not just the past. We value the Eight Points first formulated by the Center for Progressive Christianity in America and adapted for the UK by PCN Britain, not as a creed or a statement of faith, but as an expression of how we live as Christians. We are a membership organization.

Project Interfaith (Omaha, NE, USA)

Project Interfaith strives to create a world where people of all faiths and beliefs are valued and included. We grow understanding, respect and relationships among people of all faiths. We realize that for many people the traditional model of "dialogue" (sitting around in a circle sharing your beliefs) is not comfortable or even appealing, so we try to find creative ways (like interfaith architecture tours, storytelling festivals, study circles, and speakers series) to get people to explore religious diversity and to learn about each other's beliefs as well as their own. We also provide guidance, trainings and resources to help professionals--including educators, care givers, health care workers and social service providers--better serve and work with people of diverse beliefs and faiths. Project Jambo (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)

Who Are We?

We believe that each positive human interaction builds a positive chain of connection. The longer and stronger the chain, the less room there is for social isolation and extreme ideas that label and divide us, rather than unite and empower us. Social peace and harmony do not just happen, it starts with two people communicating and connecting.

If you would like to learn new ways to improve your relationships with family, friends and colleagues, then Project Jambo is for you.

Who Is This For?

For those who want to improve communication skills to connect with others as well as improve strained family, social or work relationships due to very  different viewpoints on important issues.

For those who know someone who is socially isolated and want to learn how to support them in connecting with others. Research shows social isolation increases the chances of embracing extreme views.

Our divisions impair our capacities to problem solve as a society. Join those interested in finding ways to decrease toxic polarisation and improve social stability and harmony.

What Do We Do?

We offer fun interactive group workshops where you’ll learn new skills to lay the foundations to better communicate and connect with others, especially those who may have extreme views compared to yourself.

You will walk out with tools that will improve your relationships, reduce stress and show you how to have productive disagreements.

Our Vision: Project Jambo believes that due to increasing polarisation and intolerance, none of us can take social harmony for granted any longer. Our vision is that we all take responsibility for social harmony by having courageous conversations with those who hold different views than ourselves.

Our Mission: To take responsibility for social harmony by teaching the skills needed to have productive disagreements with those with different views to improve relationships and promote social peace.

How Do We Do It?

Purposeful

The activities and games are designed to facilitate communication and are conducted by trained facilitators. Expect to be taken outside your comfort zone in fun and helpful ways. You are free to choose the activities you would like to participate in.

Playful

You will feel exhilarated and empowered like you have been to a lovely party and made new friends.

Each event is a bit different and you’re welcome to attend as many times as you like!

Powerful

In the words of Noreena Hertz: “…it is through spending time with people who are different to us and exercising our muscles of cooperation, compassion and consideration that we can come to feel more connected to each other and develop a sense of shared fate and belonging.”

Project My Voice (Middletown, NJ, USA)

Project My Voice (PMV) celebrates the power of short films to spark dialogue and deliberation. Every selected film is paired with a brief period of facilitated dialogue and forum theater, which allows the audience to directly engage with not only the story but also each other!

Our team includes professional facilitators and mental health counselors that create psychologically safe, open, and meaningful spaces for people of all backgrounds and beliefs to engage critical issues.

We provide a variety of services to ensure that every event is a fun, engaging, and uplifting experience for all:

DIALOGUE: For each film screening, our experienced facilitators create a safe and inclusive space for audience members to share their ideas and perspectives, and to listen and learn from one another.

DELIBERATION: Special film screenings allow us to focus on specific issues, and then guide the audience on how to deliberate on the issues raised, using structured and inclusive methods. We provide guidance and support on how to define and frame issues, how to gather and evaluate information, and how to make decisions that are fair, informed, and representative of the entire community.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: We support civic engagement by providing training, resources, and support to individuals, groups, and organizations that want to participate in public decision-making through the medium of film.

MENTAL HEALTH: All sensitive topics are addressed through a trauma-informed lens. Our team of mental health counselors helps us focus on safety, trust, choice, empowerment, and collaboration, and avoid re-traumatization. By applying a trauma-informed lens to critical issues, we can not only support and educate individuals who have experienced trauma but also promote a better understanding and awareness of mental health challenges throughout our communities.

Ultimately, our goals are very simple: Help communities have better conversations, build stronger relationships, and achieve more sustainable and equitable outcomes by working together.

Project Peacemakers (Winnipeg, MB, Canada)

Project Peacemakers is a body of people who are working for peace from a faith perspective and we are a local chapter of Project Ploughshares. We believe that peace is more than the absence of war. A peaceful society is one which is just and where all people are free to strive for wholeness. We try to create a peaceful society by motivating and educating ourselves and our community.

We believe in a world that can love, learn and liberate. Our faith calls us to action for peace, against violence, against greed (especially in its globalized corporate form). We are in solidarity with all who share this vision.

Project Peacemakers has been active since 1983.  Since that time we have maintained an office, staff and resource centre.  Our activites have been varied as we have tried to respond to current issues of peace and justice.  For example, when the Contra War was raging we sent a "Witness for Peace" delegation to Nicaragua.  During the height of the nuclear threat during the Cold War we joined forces with U.S. peace activists to protest at the nuclear missile silos in North Dakota. We were in the forefront of the opposition to both wars against Iraq and led the Manitoba action to protest the use and stockpiling of landmines.

We continue to educate our members and the public (particularly through the churches) through educational forums, educational pamphlets and presentations to groups on current issues such as Child Soldiers, War-Affected Children, Violent Video Games and Toys. We have produced a Peace Resource for Teachers, a Remembrance Day Assembly Program on CDRom, and publish a quarterly newsletter called 'Peace Projections'.  We also have bi-weekly events bulletins that we distribute through email.

Project Peacemakers often partners with other local and non-local groups that work for peace.  One example is our annual partnership with the Manitoba Japanese-Canadian Citizens Association and Peace Alliance Winnipeg for our "Lanterns for Peace Memorial Event", which occurs every year on the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  We welcome suggestions for partnerships and also welcome volunteers interested in assisting us with our projects.

Purple Impression (Fremont, CA, USA)

We are dedicated to bringing the conscious fashionista trendy clothing hand embroidered by the women in Pakistan & through factories that are not sweatshops.

We hope to bring you a collection of trendy, sophisticated and comfortable clothing that both moms and daughters can enjoy. Our designs reflect distinct fusion of cultural art, global fashion and current trends to offer you the ultimate fashion experience.

Purple Impression was really born out of our need for trendy ethical fashion that was both fashion forward, affordable and sustainable. We saw a trend of luxury fashion in the ethical industry and nothing that an average slow fashion lover, like ourselves could afford. It is our belief that you can have a bigger impact on women living in poverty, by making ethical clothing more accessible to a wider market. This lead us to a plan that included getting as close to the source as possible, and cutting all middle men involved in making our clothes. We went to the city of Multan, which is hub to Pakistans finest hand embroiders, most of whom are widows and spinsters living under poverty, or women exploited by the middlemen of fashion industry. We sourced Natural, Eco fabric locally and have used hand cutting techniques that produces minimum to zero waste. We have worked with designs that are versatile and would appeal to any fashionista. Its all about styling ladies, wear it your way.

Our plan is to use the power of internet to bring ethical fasihon directly to you and to rebel against the fashion formula. All of our profits are re-invested back into the artisans to help them out in their time of need, or they go to local charities that support women who are victims of domestic abuse.

Our clothing is for all the impressionistas who are trying to make a positive impact in their own way. Be it by taking care of their children, taking care of mother earth, volunteering for a cause, or just by smiling and being kind.

So join us as we pick up the pebbles and head towards moving the mountain for the sake of social change.

Lots of Love, Peace and Happiness

Raffi Foundation (Salt Srping Island, BC, Canada)

"Child Honouring is a unique social change revolution, one with the child at its heart. It is a positive vision that holds "the primacy of early years" as key to activating the powerful potential of our species."

Child Honouring: Raffi’s Vision

Respect for the child as a whole person was always at the heart of Raffi’s music career. After decades of inquiry into what children need to thrive, his work evolved into a vision of a world that would respect its young. In 1997, Raffi was inspired to develop a holistic philosophy called Child Honouring. The heart of this vision was expressed two years later in A Covenant for Honouring Children, (Raffi’s poetic declaration of our duty to the young), along with its nine principles. The Covenant and Principles are now circulated widely in public health and education circles.

The philosophy is set out in the book Child Honouring: How To Turn This World Around which was edited by Raffi & Prof. Sharna Olfman, an internationally renowned child psychologist. With a foreword by the Dalai Lama, this anthology is a ground-breaking work which provides an exciting, positive vision of how, in the words of Nelson Mandela, to “turn this world around, for the children.”.

By putting the universal needs of children first, strategies can be developed to meet our most pressing needs: building community, restoring planetary health, peacemaking, and creating sustainable economies that support the wellbeing of children and families.

Child Honouring is an invitation to imagine and create a diversity of child-friendly cultures. A child-honouring society would show love for its children in every facet of its design and organization.

As an integrated philosophy, Child Honouring allows us to question everything from the way we measure economic progress to our stewardship of the Earth; from our physical treatment of children to the corporate impact on their minds and bodies; from unthinking consumerism to factory schooling. By honouring the child we honour the Earth, as we work toward a sustainable world.

Seventy of our friends gathered for a national conference in Ann Arbor in August and collectively we "nailed" these 10 Principles to a portal, a deliberate echo of the nailing in Europe half a millennium ago. As our new portal, ReadTheSpirit, expands through early 2008, we will become a global gathering place for people who find these voices helpful in their daily lives.

Religions for Peace (New York City, NY, USA)

Religions for Peace is the world's largest and most representative multi-religious coalition advancing common action among religious communities for peace. The Religions for Peace Global Youth Network advance common action for disarmament toward shared security in a year-long disarmament campaign to be launched in November 2009.

The Youth will engage religious leaders and communities, international organizations, governments, national assemblies and parliaments, municipalities, media, and other members of civil society to reduce the threat of nuclear and conventional weapons as well as demand a reduction in military spending. They will do so through education, mobilization, and advocacy in a unique effort to unite for a common goal and unleash the socially transformative power of religion.

The campaign is rooted in the understanding that a safer world is one in which development, national security and respect for human rights are advanced simultaneously and in good faith. Eight hundred senior religious leaders from over one hundred countries at the Religions adopted this holistic notion of shared security for Peace VIII World Assembly in Kyoto, Japan in 2006. It recognizes the inherent vulnerability of all persons, their inter-relatedness and common obligation to protect and advance their dignity and care for their common earth.

Renaissance Spiritual Community (Pretoria, South Africa)

Renaissance will always be a safe space to create an alternative for honest spiritual travelers. Within this space, the individual on his or her spiritual journey guided, supported and encouraged. Our mission is summed up in the Seven Points of departure . These points of departure are broad guidelines within which we find ourselves looking and temporarily.

Our understanding of spirituality is that it is a journey and not a destination. Therefore it is so important to us and our fellow travelers to a life of wonder and respect for the great and unfathomable Mystery which we call the divine, living and dying. This secret is not intelligibly in any human word or formulas. Our intention is never to make an idol of any doctrine of the divine.Although we consciously from the Christian tradition (in its broadest sense), then we are open and tolerant of all religious traditions and the human community of all ages and cultures.

Restorative Justice Initiative (Brooklyn, NY, USA)

Restorative Justice Initiative (RJI) is a citywide, multi-sector organizing and advocacy project seeking to increase the visibility of, and access to, restorative justice processes for all New Yorkers.

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that can be employed both re-actively, in response to conflict and/or crime, and proactively to strengthen community by fostering communication and empathy. Restorative Justice invites everyone impacted by a conflict and/or crime to develop a shared understanding of both the root causes and the effects. Restorative Justice seeks to address the needs of those who have been harmed, while encouraging those who have caused harm to take responsibility. Restorative Justice has a range of applications within communities, schools, and the justice system. It may also be used to address mass social conflict and/or injustice.

RJI was built based on the recognition by local restorative justice practitioners and supporters that New York is not currently—but can and should be—a leader in the field. Restorative justice offers a viable, evidence-based alternative to our punitive/retributive approaches to criminal justice and school discipline and it ought to be a key component of the city’s reform agenda. But its acceptance cannot happen without increased public awareness of the benefits such programs can bring to entire communities. Restorative Justice Initiative is playing a key role in building this awareness.

RJI is fulfilling its mission in several ways: We are building a network of local restorative justice practitioners and supporters in order to foster more collaboration and to build an effective coalition in support of policy change in the city and beyond. We regularly distribute resources to our network via email and social media and we organize and host events that serve to raise public awareness of restorative justice and to bring practitioners from across the city together to learn about each other's work. Thus we serve as both a networking hub and an information clearinghouse.

Restore Humanity (Fayetteville, AR, USA)

Restore Humanity is non-profit organization that is run by a global team—our projects are designed, implemented, and maintained by people from different parts of the world working together to realize a shared vision.

Vision:

Our vision is a world where every person has access to basic human necessities, compassion and kindness are commonplace, and there is a perpetual concern for the well-being of others.

Mission:

We restore humanity by taking the opportunity to help whenever, wherever, and however we can – not dictating the terms of our assistance, but responding to the needs of the individuals and communities we are serving

CORE VALUES

1. Golden Rule

2. All About People

3. Intensive Cross-Cultural Collaboration

4. Prudent Use of Funds & Resources

5. Total Transparency

6. Strategic Fluidity & Patience

7. Drop the Cape

Golden Rule: We treat others the way we want to be treated. This means avoiding sensationalizing and perpetuating misconceptions and negative or clichéd stereotypes. The best way to restore and preserve humanity is to treat the people we serve with the dignity and respect we would want shown to us if we were similarly situated. Being compassionate requires empathy and kindness—not pity.

All About People: Everything we do is to further the betterment of people, restoring humanity in each person that we work with through our actions and ideas. The needs of the people we are serving take priority over everything else. However we also take into consideration all of the people involved in what we are doing, our staff, partners, and donors. Restore Humanity=all about people.

Intensive Cross-Cultural Collaboration: RH projects are designed, implemented, and maintained by people from different parts of the world working together to realize a shared vision. The people within the community we are serving know much more about what they need than we do. Enlisting their ideas and cooperation cultivates a sense of ownership on their part, which in turn help ensure the success and sustainability of our projects. Therefore Restore Humanity will necessarily rely on and makes use of the skills, talent, knowledge, and effort of its community partners.

Prudent Use of Funds & Resources: We will invest our resources wisely and where it can have the greatest impact within our defined programs. This means even if we were to receive a large sum of money we would use every penny wisely out of respect for our loyal and generous donors as well as the people we are serving. It is unethical to waste money and disrespectful to both the giver and receiver. We will take measured and careful steps to avoid wasting funds or resources by doing our due diligence up front and along every step of the way.

We also strive to use locally made materials, supplies, and labor whenever possible. This helps the economy, helps to empower the people there and if we use local supplies and labor, then we can maintain what we are doing. We have the capability to fix anything that gets broken. Efficiency is key to Sustainability.

Total Transparency—with everyone, all of the time: our donors, our staff, both the US and global teams—and of course those who we are serving. Transparency ensures both integrity and accountability.

This does not mean we tell people everything all of the time, it just means that there is nothing that is hidden or “off the table” EXCEPT when it concerns someone’s privacy.

Strategic Fluidity & Patience: We take considerate, deliberate actions and steps—yet also strive to be reflective and measured. We build solid foundations and frameworks but leave room for expansion and growth. An accurate appreciation for the reality on the ground should always inform our decision-making. Our intention is to create both solid, sustainable growth and successful projects by taking one step at a time and keeping our eyes open.

Drop the Cape: We are honored and grateful to be doing the work we are doing; it is an incredible opportunity. We must always strive to keep the focus on what we are here to do, not get caught in the “savior” or “superhero mentality”. The work is our reward—it is not about us, it is about the people we are serving. Let us always keep in mind to “drop the cape” and focus on what matters.

Reunited Society of Believers- Hoot’s Roost (Richmond, IN, USA)

The Reunited Society of Believers - Hoot's Roost Inc. is a gift-based community of service that opened its doors in 2014 and incorporated in 2018. We are a newly forming and developing not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping adults and communities grow. We equip individuals to identify and activate their unique gifts while concurrently addressing real human needs in small Homegroups℠ that provide evidence-based supports and psychoeducation.

The Society of Believers is cultivating spiritual growth for individuals and communities through its 5-H℠ Praxis of Hospitality | Healing | Home | Heart | Harmony. These 5 H's are central to our service in the world.

Hoot’s Roost is in its 5th year as hospitality service provider of guest housing in Philadelphia, PA. We are opening a new location in the Catskills, Sullivan County. The two acre parcel is owned and operated by the Reunited Society of Believers, a gift-based community of service. Here at Hoot’s Roost, Catskills, our primary goal is to regenerate the Land from the damage done by human activity. We envision this Land to be productive, ecologically independent, and a model for sustainable Land uses in a developing Tiny House community. We currently own 2 acres with electric, Well water, a 1000 sq. ft. propane heated mobile home, tent platforms, and are developing a campsite with a 32’ three-season RV currently on location.

We function mostly as an Airbnb, short term rental accommodation, and are developing a retreat center program focused on digital detox and creative recovery.

We believe in Christ Consciousness and the Universal Authority of the Holy Spirit - as evidenced in Biblical Literature, religious tradition, and the unique personal and collective experiences of all Children of Good - in matters of faith and practice;

We believe that same Spirit, under many Names, is central in the lives of individual Believers and the Gathered Community. We affirm the freedom and right of every Believer to interpret and apply the Wisdom revealed in Holy Scriptures and the Creation under the leadership and guidance of the Living Spirit of Christ.

As such, we believe in the priesthood of all believers. We affirm the freedom and responsibility of every person to relate directly to God without the imposition of creed or the control of clergy or government.

We believe in the autonomy of every local Gathered Community. We believe Communities of Believers are free, under Wisdom’s guidance, to Discern their membership and leadership, to Order their Worship and Work, and to Ordain whomever they perceive as gifted for Service and Ministry. Believers are free to participate as they deem appropriate in the larger Body of Believers.

We believe in freedom of religion, freedom for religion, and freedom from religion.

We support the separation of church and state while recognizing that nothing can separate us from the Love and Operations of God, wherever Believers are called to serve.

Risking Light: Journeys of Forgiveness (Minneapolis, MN, USA)

Originally envisioned as a feature documentary film, Risking Light is a episodic video podcast divided into two threads. The first thread is essentially a feature documentary told over the course of 12 short episodes released in a 3 month timeframe.

Risking Light: Journeys of Forgiveness

Mary's son is killed in cold blood. Kilong's family starves to death while he is enslaved by a brutal political regime. Bob is stolen from his parents and raised by abusive caregivers, set on making him "white." From a mother's meeting with her child's killer to a genocide survivor's decision to turn away from vengeance, Risking Light explores the act of forgiving the unforgivable through these stories from the United States, Cambodia, and Australia. No religious or academic experts, just the lived experiences of five remarkable people -- Mary, Oshea, Kilong, Bob, and Debra – as they anguish, hate, and, finally, forgive.

Risking Light interweaves their painful journeys and invites us to look at the struggle for forgiveness in our own lives. Is it as simple as saying the words, "I forgive you"? Must victims meet face-to-face with their tormentors to truly forgive? What happens after the words are said?

Risking Light: Stories from the road (released at the same time or soon after Journeys of Forgiveness, also short episodes)

"Average people" have phenomenal stories. Series of intimate stories from "average people" from around the world talking about forgiveness in their lives. Each episode introduces a new story of someone's struggle with forgiveness. From a woman whose best friend was murdered to a child whose sister lied to her, these stories speak to the range and depth that forgiveness factors into each of our lives.

Partnerships

We are looking to partner with organizations whose mission compliments our own to share these stories and inspire worldwide dialogue around forgiveness. What it means for individuals? What it means for groups? What it means for countries? What it means for humanity.

Rochester Friends worship is unprogrammed, with no formal liturgy or minister. In meeting we are led to listen most of the time in silence to the ministry of the Inward Light, each quietly seeking to know first hand the presence of God and to discover an immediate sense of Divine leading.

No one needs to speak, but all are invited to share the fruits of their meditations as they are led by the Spirit. Worship is not a discussion or forum. We do not argue, challenge, or criticize during worship. We listen to what has been spoken and quietly return to our center without any dialogue.

Worship lasts approximately 60 minutes and ends when the clerk joins hands with the persons next to him or her. All are asked to join hands in a circle.

We come because the Quaker way of worship offers a sanctuary of silence where we can quiet ourselves to feel and know what is really true. We can rest in the healing power of the silence and restore our souls.

We come because we need others who are walking a similar spiritual path, trusting that they will hold us up when we stumble; knowing that we will do the same should they fall. We are the faces of hope for each other.

We come because Quakers affirm that "there is that of God in everyone" and full respect is given to all.

Rochester Friends Meeting has just become a Sanctuary Support Church.

Ruby Red Coaching & Consulting (London, United Kingdom)

“A life worth living doesn’t exist along a flat plain – ‘in balance’. A good life has its peaks and troughs. It has the strength and flexibility to swing with the bad, then spring toward the good without snapping or losing shape.” Anne-Marie Rodriguez de Killeen

People often talk about achieving their ideal life work balance – usually meaning less work and more life – as if they were completely separate entities.  What people really want is the time and opportunity to do more of the things they love doing, with the people they enjoy doing it with.  For many, their work – the job that pays their wages – provides the best vehicle to achieve this, so striving for the stereotypical life work balance isn’t going to do the job.

The key to truly effective life work balance is integration. By fulfilling all parts of your life you move into a state of…some call it flow, some your passion, others the buzz or being in the zone. We call it your Mojo. You’ve experienced it before…creative juices are gushing, your intellect is on fire and success is easier to reach. There’s electricity flowing seamlessly from your work, to your relationships, to your hobbies, to you and back into your work again. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle of creativity, productivity, fun and success – you’ve found your Mojo and it feels great.

A truly healthy organization wants the same things: a motivated and happy workforce, at the peak of their Mojo, achieving their best and making a profit at the same time. An integrated, balanced life can be a complicated life and sometimes our Mojo can get tired, lost, disillusioned or confused. You need a little help, a pair of ruby red slippers, to get back on track.

Ruby Red Coaching & Consulting is led by Anne-Marie Rodriguez de Killeen, a qualified Personal Development Coach and Consultant in Corporate Sustainability.  Anne-Marie’s style of working combines creativity, humor and inspiration with established coaching, business management, communication and NLP techniques.  It’s a style that’s succeeded in helping many individuals and organizations invigorate their Mojo – to achieve their fullest potential be it in their career, creative expression, life experience, relationships or business.

sacred Grove Community Circle SWC (Falls Church, VA, USA)

Sacred Grove Community Circle in Fairfax County, Virginia, is an open circle welcoming people of all traditions and paths to our sporadic events and reaching out to serve people of any faith or none in times of need. Most of us are affiliated with other spiritual groups as well, and most of us have traveled winding paths. We meet here and online, a place between the worlds, for refreshment of spirit and swapping yarns with others on the way.

Sacred Grove is grounded in the Bhakti-Wiccan tradition of the Fellowship of the Sacred Grove,

We are one of the few civilian circles of Sacred Well Congregation (SWC), which is a universalist, independent, non-evangelical Wiccan Church organized for the purpose of conducting and promoting religious worship on alternative spiritual paths. SWC is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Butler, Missouri, which provides open, public venues for the practice of the Old Religions, promotes community benevolence efforts, provides spiritual support, and offers religious educational programs. Most of the other SWC open circles are on military bases, where they are open to all under the care of SWC-endorsed Distinctive Faith Group Leaders (DGFLs), who are under the authority of the military chaplains. Like those circles, we adhere to the Covenant of Five Tenetsof SWC.

In service to those in need in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, Sacred Grove is an affiliated congregation of Rising Sun Outreach Ministry, a church incorporated in Maryland
in 2014 to support congregations and clergy who, in turn, support people in need — a church of caregivers to the caregivers.

Saint George's Church (Flushing, NY, USA)

Who We Are

We are a diverse intercultural parish with worship services conducted in 3 primary languages: English, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. Saint George’s Episcopal Church elects a single Vestry from all 3 language-specific cultures to manage our affairs. Our church is but one within the dynamic Diocese of Long Island, and has grown from serving early English settlers to providing community, language, and spiritual services to parishioners who thrive on contributing to the most dynamic and industrious nation on Earth.

After an intentional discernment process, we have agreed on four strategic goals:

identifying as one body in Christ, a community reflecting his light and compassion;

maintaining a spiritual connection with God through Scripture, prayer, meditation, and teaching;

treating others as we would want to be treated, doing God’s work without boundaries;

ministering with our combined youth—motivating, supporting, and guiding them to build a foundation of Christian values.

In point of fact, Saint George’s Church offers many activities to promote our service to the Flushing community. For example, our doors are open to the public daily; the Service League operates a Thrift Shop; we hold an Annual Bazaar, host a Music School (CenterStage: the Queens Center for the Performing Arts), host a chapter of Episcopal Church Women, host prayer groups and services 5 days a week; host ESL classes; and we started free tutoring for 5th to 9th grade students on Saturdays in July and August of 2011.

Our commitment to the community at large is grounded in our traditions as an expression of the Episcopal way of life. Moreover, our growing participation within the community is spurred by implementing new ideas for more language-inclusive harmonies in our traditional worship services. Currently, in each calendar year we hold at least 2 services, at Christmas and Easter, that are tri-lingual and for the complete congregation— comprising all language groups normally found in language-specific services on the other days of the year. It should be noted that our celebrations and events are open to all.

Our desire is to establish combined religious education for youth at Saint George’s. We would like to see a strong religious education component for all youth irrespective of language affiliation, preparing them for service within the Church as either lay readers or as befits other ministries, instilling in them an identity that proceeds from Episcopalian beliefs and traditions. Our Church youth will benefit from corollary competencies in English and the American idiom.

The Diocese of Long Island has a ministry dedicated to working with youth and youth projects within the Episcopal Church. The Cathedral for the Diocese is located in Garden City, 15 miles from our Church.

Where We Are Going

The future at Saint George’s Church relies on the total acceptance of intercultural realities specific and peculiar to Flushing, New York, in spiritual harmony with our diverse membership within the larger Church, as we celebrate our identity as one body in Christ.

Visionaries of the world of commerce plan for our near future a community with luxury apartment housing and dynamic retail enterprises, working diligently to make their ideas realities in measured progression year by year.

Changes are typical for Flushing, and the future will bring even more beautification and economic opportunity to our community. Saint George’s is a part of and not apart from the changes that define our neighborhood. To be sure, our parish members have been entrusted with history, a prominent edifice on a modern thoroughfare, and a measure of faith able to move mountains. Just as our neighborhood is and will continue to be a drawing point for new immigrants, accomplished businesspeople, industrious entrepreneurs and cultural innovators, our Church must be able to lead and minister to all of Flushing’s residents. We are a drawing point for the future of Flushing just as we are an anchor to the founding of America itself. We are Saint George’s Episcopal Church in Flushing, New York. We have a mission to bring the Good News to all of God’s people.

Where We Have Been

Saint George’s Church began in 1702 as a church within the Anglican Church of England and was given a Royal Charter in 1761. Samuel Seabury, the first Episcopal Bishop in America, was Rector of Saint George’s from 1757 to 1765. Embroiled in the Revolutionary War against England, Francis Lewis, a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, was warden of Saint George’s from 1770 to 1773. Lewis and his wife, especially, suffered persecution at the hands of the British owing to Francis Lewis having a prominent role in breaking America’s ties to England. In pace with its warden’s revolutionary role, Saint George’s Church severed its ties with the Church of England and became a member of the new Protestant Episcopal Church in America. Our present building was completed in 1854, and Saint George’s enjoys Landmark Status as a living reminder of America’s dynamic past and promising future.

Saint George’s Episcopal Church, located on Main Street between 38th and 39th Avenues, is in the heart of downtown Flushing, New York. Saint George’s continues to minister to the community in which it is located, and draws membership from within Flushing and from the neighborhoods outside of Flushing, serving those seeking and cherishing its special charm. Saint George’s has weathered many changes since its founding, and has responded with wisdom and enthusiasm to challenges that characterize America and Americans in our rich 309-year history. Our new Rector has joined a distinguished list of prominent American heroes and spiritual leaders.

San Antonio Catholic Worker (San Antonio, TX, USA)

We refer to ourselves both as the Catholic Worker Community and as the Catholic Worker House. Since opening our house in 1985, we have sought to provide care, comfort, and support to the homeless of San Antonio. We do our work following the philosophy of the Catholic Worker Movement which emphasizes faith-centered action, personalism, community building, nonviolence, simple living, and a respect for the environment.

As an independent and faith-based community, we do our work with the belief that God will provide for our needs through the community surrounding us - people of different faiths, races, and economic conditions. We do not accept government funding, and we are not under the auspices of any institutional church or diocese. We rely on volunteer labor and the donations of those who believe in what we are doing.
One of the most important philosophies of the San Antonio Catholic Worker Community is that ofpersonalism. In all aspects of Catholic Worker House life we strive to treat our fellow community members as individuals worthy of our respect, to be thought of as brothers and sisters rather than as strangers for whom we do charity work. We believe that in this way we can struggle together as a community to make our surrounding conditions better.

We are also strongly committed to living a lifestyle of nonviolence. As followers of Christ it is our sincere belief that violence for any reason is unnecessary and detrimental to humanity; there is always another, better solution to any problem that may arise. We see the violence and oppression committed against the poor of our society as directly related to the violence committed against the poor of all nations. In both cases the effects are the same: hunger, homelessness, and death. Instead, we perform works of mercy as a bold witness against such violence.

Several groups in other Brazilian cites are affiliated to the main group.

The name “Águas da Compaixão” (Waters of Compassion) is a reference to a mantra that invokes the “turning of the wheel of the water of compassion”, which is recited during the reading of “Kanromon” (Gate of Sweet Nectar) during its Soto Zen cerimonies of “feeding the hungry ghosts”. Many imagens of Kannon, symbol of compassion, show her holding a vase containing the water, or nectar, of compassion which she pours over all of us.

Scarboro Missions (Scarborough, ON, Canada)

Scarboro Missions is a Society of Canadian Catholics, priests and laity, motivated by the Spirit, who dedicate themselves to the person, teaching and mission of Jesus Christ as expressed in his words: "I have come that they may have life and have it to the full." (John 10:10)

Founded in 1918 by Fr. John Mary Fraser to train and send priests to China, the China Mission College grew quickly and evolved. Today we are known as Scarboro Missions, a society whose members serve not only in China, but elsewhere in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Canada.

The prophetic vision of Vatican Council II reawakened the baptismal call of all Catholics to actively participate in the mission of Christ. It especially revealed the vital witness of laity and the unique gifts that they offer to further God's Reign in the world. Since 1974, single men and women, as well as married couples, have been invited to join with Scarboro priests as global missioners for Christ and His Church.

Today we go forth as priests and laity in a variety of new ways, as missioners united by a common spirit and a passion to make known the love of God that is transforming all peoples and cultures.

Shah Latif Foundation (Matiari, Pakistan)

Shah Latif Foundation (SLF) is non-government and not for profit organization working in Sindh, Pakistan. The organization has its vision, mission and values related to universal peace, tolerance and sense of cooperation. The universal message of the greatest Sufi poet and mystic, Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai has been followed for effective practices of promoting love and cooperation. Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai preached love, peace and tolerance, irrespective of caste or creed through his poetry, which is greatly, admired the world over. Love and tolerance turns a man into a human being. People have many desires and ambitions; it seems that they are stuck up in a struggle or race to get ahead of the rest, or achieve their desired objectives, even at the cost of others emotions. We have done to our historical buildings and places! Against this backdrop, this is what we actually need to understand and value, because love and tolerance, as propagated by Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, are the two major tools that we need presently to fix our society. We need to show love and tolerance to co-exist not only in our own, but also the international community.

The message of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai for peace and tolerance. "Birds fly together; they never separate from each other. Look, how the birds love one another more than man can ever do."

SimpleGifts: Unitarian Centre for Social Action (London, United Kingdom)

Have a look at our most recent year-end synopsis.

WHAT WE DO

We run community programming from our Bethnal Green, East London premises. Our programmes - including our After School Club, New Neighbours/Old Neighbours Lunch, and ESOL classes - are all run by a team of dedicated volunteers.

See our latest presentation "SimpleGifts: Rooted for Growth"

OUR HISTORY

In the autumn of 2011, in response to the riots and social unrest of the preceding summer, a small group of Unitarians committed to social outreach met together in London and started talking about what a consolidated UK-wide effort could look like. Having an under-used church building in East London with no active congregation potentially available, we discussed creating a centre for training that would include a "living lab" of on-the-ground programming to enrich the lives of local residents and give UK Unitarians a place to meet, volunteer and be inspired by. What came out of this was SimpleGifts: Unitarian Centre for Social Action.

With support from the LDPA (London District and Provincial Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches) and the Chalice Foundation (the board of trustees responsible for the Mansford Street building), we formed a small committee, chaired by Rev David Usher and run by Rev Rob Gregson and Ann Howell. We opened our doors in May 2012 and haven't looked back!

Sisters of the Divine Compassion (White Plains, NY, USA)

Who We Are

We are a Community of vowed Sisters, lay Associates and Companions. We share in the charism and mission of Divine Compassion with our partners, colleagues, donors, alumni, families, friends, staff, clients and all with whom we minister.

From the very beginning, Divine Compassion has been about the blending of strength and tenderness, community-building and hospitality, empowerment and solidarity, particularly with those who are disadvantaged.

Our Divine Compassion Community’s hallmarks of gentleness, patience, and joy are the gifts of our patron saints, Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal, who found in these every day virtues the essence of the Divine Compassion.

Our Mission

Empowered by God’s love, we are called to be the compassionate presence of God in the world.

Touched by God’s mercy, we are called to be life-giving women of prayer who respond to the signs of the times by embracing the suffering of others, and bringing God’s healing love to them.

Our Vision

Trusting in Divine Compassion, we seek to be co-creators of God’s evolving universe, healing God’s people, challenging injustice, and offering the gift of hope to our world.

In partnership with our lay Associates and Companions, we are committed to the Gospel and our charism, and are called to enable liberation and empowerment of people, especially women and children, and those marginalized, oppressed and paralyzed by lack of resources. This is our vision that cries out to become a reality. This is our time and Compassion is our gift.

Soldier ON Service Dogs (Fayetteville, AR, USA)

Soldier On Service Dogs is a 501c3 charitable organization that provides service dogs at no charge to veterans suffering from PTSD and other disabilities.

Arkansas has one of the highest per capita veteran populations. In fact nearly 10% of Arkansans have served or do currently serve in the military. Look around you. They are our neighbors ... our family.

The supply of service dogs has to date been haphazard, disorganized and unregulated. It is plagued by inadequately trained trainers, misrepresentation – in some cases fraud, untrained dogs in a public setting and a myriad of other issues.

Only 10 to 15 service dogs are trained in Arkansas currently. There is a demand for 2,500 service dogs in Arkansas

We hope to get to a point where we are training 30 service dogs a year.

Mission Statement – To operate as a charitable organization by providing, at no charge, trained service dogs to qualified clients and contributing to the overall knowledge base of best practices associated with service dogs.

We will engage in acquiring suitable dogs and the training of dogs, trainers and clients.

We will focus on quality -- quality of the dog, its training, its trainers and recipient clients in order to help increase the chances of successful placement and ongoing dog/client partnership.

We will collect and maintain records related to dogs, trainers and clients and training techniques.

We will work to increase awareness of service dogs amongst the general public.

Meet me @SongsThatGive on Periscope and I’ll soon share with you:

How rhythm, melody and music hypnotizes

One of the most powerfully effect music forms of our time

The sound that attracts and unifies a large fan base

A few of those who studied these techniques were, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and even George Clinton, Parliament/Funkadellic and more

The technique is so effective that corporations use it in commercials and recording artists unknowingly imitate it. All they know is “They like it.”

The process is still a major part of hit music writing today.

Now you can learn to apply this technique in your message to your current and future customers.

Hi, I’m Tony, you may know me from my experience street marketing a few of Sony Music’s past gospel labels, Tyscot and Verity. I became famous in the educational music industry for creating recorded products for people who love helping others and were raising attention for creating the change. At heart, I like sprinkling love and compassion where possible and can’t much stand to see people mistreating or taking advantage of others. Almost daily, I’m probably posting helpful words or a picture on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Soshima Zen Center (Plainfield, NJ, USA)

The sky does not discriminate and the Earth supports all equally, yet the wonders of the Universe are revealed to those with the eye and heart of longing. The mountain hermits are the spring source of the rivers of wisdom that flow freely. Soshimsa Zen Center is an oasis in this turbulent world. We stand at the gates; we keep the waters of wisdom pure; we welcome all who thirst. We are Soshimsa Zen Center. We are The Guardians of Tradition.

Your physiological, psychological and spiritual well-being. Your mind and body connection and achieving the optimal state of balance between the two. To this end we offer a wide variety of programs from meditation classes, Zen Buddhism, philosophy, full spectrum self-defense curriculum (Sa Hwal Bop), stress-reduction, healing arts, outdoor adventure programs, as well as educational outreach. All of our teachers are experts in their respective arts and are followers of Seng Hwal Bulgyo (Living Zen) tradition. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that skillfully merges the time-tested ancient techniques and philosophies with the modern way of thinking and living. South Congregational Church (St. Johnsbury, VT, USA)

We are a local congregation with a long history of serving the community of faith in St. Johnsbury, VT and the surrounding communities. We are a Compassionate Faith Community and are a member of the Charter For Compassion.

HISTORY OF SOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

In 1851, the members of the “Church of St. Johnsbury Plain” completed four years of prayerful discussion on the needs of the growing community by voting that “the interests of religion require a new church at the South end (of town); that a building be erected at the expense of the whole society to be owned and occupied by a colony from the mother church of not less than one-quarter nor more than one third of its membership, chosen by committee of designation and to be organized at their consent”. Thus, on October 23, 1851, the colony of 66 members formally organized South Congregational Church.

With the colony worshipping at St. Johnsbury Academy, the society entered into an ambitious building program. Asa Edgerton received the $3000 contract for the construction of the church building, and Horace Carpenter, whose workmanship is now evident in the existing structure, began cutting timber from nearby hillsides to provide lumber for the project. The house of worship, with its classic architectural symmetry and typical New England Wren features, was built as an exact replica of the mother church. Changes in the original plans brought the final cost for construction to $4006.57. On January 14, 1852, members of South Congregational Church gathered in their sanctuary to dedicate the new edifice to the glory of God.

The worshipers who gathered on that January day found box-type pews with straight backs and no cushions. Light shone through the small-pane windows onto the lovely mahogany pulpit. As evening fell, the room was illuminated by whale-oil lamps, casting a warm glow on the white walls and ceiling.

The church’s interior underwent extensive renovation as early as 1888. The pews were rebuilt, the ceiling and walls frescoed, and memorial stained-glass windows were installed. Another renovation was completed in 1969, when the pulpit was moved closer to the congregation, the new organ was installed, and the choir loft moved to its present location. In May, 1998, the sanctuary of South Church was rededicated at a service celebrating the completion of the most recent renovation which recaptured some of the “feel” of the beautiful decor of the original construction.

Spirit of Love ~The Rockaway Sangha (Belle Harbor, NY, USA)

"The next Buddha may take the form of a community ~ Thich Nhat Hahn

The radical notion of independence from organized religions is the foundational philosophy of Spirit of Love~The Rockaway Sangha.

Informed by my understanding that one realizes their personhood, their spirituality, their Godhead for themselves in silence, in the absence of dogma, cultural taboos, restrictive practices, and exclusion of women in hierarchy, I sought to offer a safe place to Be in the form of a community Sangha.

We, as spirits having a human experience, exist in relationship . We are formed from relationship and we are honed in relationship. The more relationships we are exposed to, the finer we attune our own selves . We become closer to knowing who we are in relationship to others.

Communities represent a collection, a microcosm, of people who offer us opportunities to see the face of God in others and in doing so, reflect it back to ourselves for evaluation and processing.

I am quite fond of this excerpt from C.S. Lewis:

So it was you all along.

Everyone I ever loved, it was you.

Everything decent or fine that ever happened to me,

Everything that made me reach out and try to be better,

It was you all along.

Spirit of Love~The Rockaway Sangha is an indie Sangha. Independent of organized religions.

It is a Sangha in its purest form.

An urban lay community its of people who practice Mindfulness Meditation in order to reduce suffering and increase happiness in tangible, practical, meaningful ways.

For our good and the good of everyone.

The Spirit of Love is a mooring in the midst of life's day-to-day struggles.

We come together to support one another, to learn how to become more fully human, to expand our awareness of our Internal nature and to practice Loving Kindness and Compassion in Action.

The Spirit of Love is grounded in the collective spiritual leadership of the community.

There is no top down hierarchy. Transmission of teachings emanates from the collective.

The Sangha offers us a means by which, as author Paulo Friere says ..men and women deal critically, collectively and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of the world.

Thich Nhat Hahn likewise says:

Transformation takes place in daily life.

To make the practice of transformation easy

Practice with a Sangha.

Spirit Space (Saugatuck, MI, USA)

Spirit Space - a gathering place - is an Interfaith Spiritual Enrichment Center in Saugatuck, Michigan

MISSION STATEMENT: Spirit Space is an Innerfaith community that inspires growth through the process of Reaching In to Reach Out

VISION: We are an Innerfaith Spiritual Community that reaches in to reach out

WE BELIEVE IN: The Innate Goodness of all of God's Creation; Direct and Affirmative Communication with the Infinite through Prayer; Intentional Co-Creation with God; Prosperity Principles in Action

“In the world, there are many different roads, but the destination is the same,” said Confucius, and these words come to mind upon entering Spirit Space, a worship and spiritual enrichment center in Saugatuck.

Located at 3493 Blue Star Hwy., Spirit Space displays various ecumenical symbols: angels, a statue of Buddha, a Christian cross, a Ralph Waldo Emerson plaque, a menorah, and a banner of ancient Chinese wisdom.

Sherry Petro-Surdel, the pastor at Spirit Space, is a graduate from the University of Chicago with a degree in Social Work. She is a certified life coach with a practices in Saugatuck and the Chicago-area. Sherry weaves wisdom from a multitude of sources to assist Spirit Space attendees in meditation, visioning, affirmative prayer and setting intentions. She is also a licensed minister who can perform weddings and commitment ceremonies. "

A spiritual renaissance is taking place in our world,” said Sherry. “At Spirit Space, we acknowledge the importance of going within for our spiritual answers. When we become aware of the infinite possibilities within, we become agents of miraculous change in the world. As Mahatma Gandhi instructed, 'We must be the change we wish to see in the world.'"

Those attending Spirit Space are mostly individuals who have been seeking an alternative to the traditional church experience. Our church is interfaith, non-denominational and has no affiliation with any religious association. It is an all-inclusive spiritual community reaching in, and, as a result, reaching out to others in the community.

Sunday gatherings at Spirit Space encompass the Universal wisdom and teachings of the great spiritual teachers, mystics and enlightened beings, and touch on such topics as gratitude, prosperity and discovering the divinity within.

At a typical Spirit Space gathering, one may hear the teachings of Jesus, Buddha or Krishna shared alongside those of Lao-Tzu, Francis of Assisi, Ernest Holmes, Charles Fillmore, Mother Teresa, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Dalai Lama or contemporary writers like Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle and Brené Brown, to name just a few. Recent references have included The Alchemist, The Warrior of Light, The Four Agreements, A Religion of One's Own, Proof of Heaven, The Bible, Qur'an, Bhagavad Gita, Dhammapada and Tao Te Ching.

“Spirit Space is a place where questions are welcomed, answers are searched for, and all people are respected,” said Jack Vandenberg, a physical therapist from Holland who is one of Spirit Space's founding members. “We celebrate these things because we are and everyone is the face of God.”

Sravasti Abbey (Newport, WA, USA)

Sravasti Abbey

"I am heartened to learn of the establishment of Sravasti Abbey in the USA... I am happy to give (it) my support and encourage others who share this interest to do likewise."
-His Holiness the Dalai Lama

About the Abbey

Fulfilling a lifelong vision to support Western sangha, Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron founded Sravasti Abbey in Newport, Washington in 2003 and serves as Abbess.

The Abbey's mission is to nurture a flourishing monastic community where learning and practicing Buddha's ancient teachings cultivate peace in the hearts of the residents and visitors and, by extension, in the world.

While monastic training is the focus, lay visitors are welcome to visit the Abbey. Countless others benefit from the Abbey's Dharma outreach.

Sravasti Abbey is named for Sravasti, where the Buddha spent twenty-five Rains Retreats. It is called an “Abbey” because male and female monastics train together as equals—brothers and sisters supporting each other on the Dharma path. We welcome your interest.

"The flourishing of the Buddha's teachings in a particular place is determined by the existence of fully ordained monks and nuns and male and female lay practitioners. Thus the existence of monks and nuns and the practice of Vinaya, the Buddhist monastic discipline, are very important."

-His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama

Vision

Throughout the ages, monasteries have been centers of Buddhist learning and practice, places that have benefited monastics, lay practitioners, and society.

Sravasti Abbey continues that tradition, providing a quiet environment conducive for Buddhist study and meditation. Fully ordained monastics, novices, and trainees live here.

We welcome visiting lay and monastic practitioners who wish to live, work, and practice in a community setting.

The monastics of Sravasti Abbey endeavor to live generously through dedicating our lives to the Buddha's teachings, practicing them earnestly, and offering them to others. We trust that people will value our way of life and work and will respond generously by providing what is needed to live and to spread the Dharma in a modern society. Together with the lay community, we are building facilities where all of us can study and practice the Buddha's teaching.

The Monastic Tradition

Buddhism began in India with Buddha Shakyamuni's enlightenment over twenty-six centuries ago. Passed from one generation of practitioners to another, the Buddha's teachings flourished throughout Asia and have recently spread to the West. Since the Buddha's time, monastics have been responsible for preserving the teachings.

By living a life of simplicity as exemplified by the Buddha and described by the Vinaya, monastics provide a healthy challenge to society's concepts of success, power, and consumption. They exemplify community life centered around spiritual practice, and in doing so, they have sustained the Buddha's teachings to the present day.

Until now, Buddhism in the United States has been focused on Dharma centers where lay students learn the Buddha's teachings. Now that these are well established, it is time to build monasteries where women and men can study, practice, and train in the monastic lifestyle.

At Sravasti Abbey

As Buddhism spread from one country to another, it has adapted to new cultural customs and evolved different external forms. In this area Sravasti Abbey is innovative. For example, gender equality and social service are key elements of community life. Most chanting is in English.

We value service as a foundation for study and practice. In addition to regular public teachings at the Abbey, monastics teach in other locations, and the Abbey acts as a resource for Dharma centers. We write Buddhist books and articles and transcribe and edit our teachers' discourses.

Monastics and lay practitioners are trained in leading meditation, discussions, and rituals. We cultivate inter-religious dialogue and offer service to the community through activities such as spiritual counseling and prison work.

By nurturing individuals' unique talents within a traditional monastic setting adapted to the present American culture, we strive to embody the Buddhist values of non-harming, mindfulness, compassion, inter-relatedness, respect for nature, and service to sentient beings—all directed towards the enlightenment of all beings.

The Abbey cultivates happy, well-balanced practitioners and a healthy community through study, meditation, and service. A community that models good communication and conflict resolution skills and is comprised of individuals who live simply and cultivate ethical discipline, love, compassion, and wisdom is an inspiration to society at large.

Sravasti Abbey provides conditions conducive for a strong Western monastic community to study and practice the Dharma.

The Buddha's teachings go beyond culture and historical time; they speak to the essence of human experience. Sravasti Abbey will preserve the meaning of these teachings in an unadulterated way.

Sravasti Abbey trains monastics who will practice and teach the Dharma purely, yet explain them in a Western context.

Living simply as the Buddha did, the monastics of Sravasti Abbey offer a model for society at large, showing that ethical discipline contributes to a morally grounded society.

Through actively developing their own qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, and wisdom, the monastics aspire to make Sravasti Abbey a beacon for peace in our conflict-torn world.

St. Bede's Episcopal Church (Los Angeles, CA, USA)

Welcome to St. Bede’s Church. We are a congregation of the Episcopal Church located in the City and Diocese of Los Angeles. St. Bede’s is the parish that serves the communities of Venice, Playa Vista, Mar Vista, Ocean Park. We also have parishioners from Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Westchester, Santa Monica, Culver City & West Los Angeles.

St. Bede’s is an inclusive Christian community, and we welcome all visitors and newcomers to worship with us at any of our services. Whether you are simply visiting or looking for a church home, you are welcome here for as long as you are with us.

If you are new to the Episcopal Church, the Eucharist (Communion) is the central focus of our worship. We invite anyone who feels drawn to join us in the service or at the Table to do so. You can also remain in your seat if you are unsure about participating.

If you are interested in becoming a member of St. Bede’s, please speak with the clergy. Please do not hesitate to contact the Rector (pastor) or other clergy if you have special needs such as baptism, confirmation, or marriage, or if you wish to consult a priest.

St. Bede’s is comprised of about 135 households with about 225 baptized members. The parish is comprised of 1/3 families (married or partnered), 1/3 singles (widowed, divorced or never-married), and 1/3 “church singles” (married or partnered, but the other person not involved in the parish).

The parish has Sunday services of Eucharist at 8 & 10 a.m. The early service is a said service with no music. At the later service, St. Bede’s Choir and its Music Director, Frank Basile, offer an invaluable ministry of praise and music. A time of fellowship follows each service in the Parish Hall. On Sundays at 6, the service of Evening Prayer is offered, usually in the chapel. It is a relaxed, meditative service using a variety of styles. Four Sundays a year, the Friends of Music at St. Bede’s offers a Choral Evensong. Each Wednesday evening, the Holy Eucharist or Evening Prayer is celebrated in the Chapel at 7 p.m. Special schedules are published for Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week & Easter Day.

On Sundays, there is a nursery for children 0-3 at 9:50 a.m. The Church School Program for children ages 9-12 has either regular classes or the atriums of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at 10 a.m. from the end of September through the end of June. The Youth Group (teenagers) meets monthly on the 2nd Sunday of the month. A Rector’s Forum is held monthly – usually on the 1st Sunday of the month – at 9 a.m. from October through May. A introduction to the Episcopal Church (“Via Media”) is held in two 8-week sessions – one in the fall and one in Lent. This is also preparation for confirmation or reception and meets weekly at Noon.

On Tuesdays at 9 a.m., meeting weekly except in July & August, the Breakfast & Bible Class begins the day with a breakfast provided by one of the members. Following the meal, the class studies the lessons for the upcoming Sunday and uses a shortened form of Morning Prayer for its worship. On Wednesdays following the 7 p.m. service, an adult forum presents classes on a variety of topics. Recent classes have studied both the Old & New Testaments, the theology of the Anglican poets, the Narnia Chronicles & C. S. Lewis, the theology of St. Paul, and is working its way through the New Church’s Teaching Series.

St. Bede’s has two women’s groups. The St. John’s Guild – open to all parishioners & their friends – meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Noon, except in July & August, beginning with a pot-luck luncheon. SJG hosts speakers and other informational programs as well as sponsoring bake sales and other parish events. The Sisters of Bede meets on the 1st Monday (2nd if the earlier week is a holiday) each month beginning with a pot-luck supper. The SoB’s host the Annual Party of Parties and coordinate the events which follow that all year. They also sponsor the breakfast on Easter Day and other special events. The Brothers of Bede is a men’s group which meet on the 2nd Sunday each month between the services at 9 a.m. They sponsor the Homecoming BBQ, the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and other events during the year.

St. Bede’s is committed to outreach. The parish contributes its fair-share to the Diocesan Mission Share Fund. Each month, on the 1st Wednesday, a group of parishioners prepares and serves lunches at the outpatient AIDS Clinic at the Los Angeles County-USC Hospital. On the 1st Sunday each month, St. Bede’s collects food for the food shelf at the St. Joseph Center in Venice. St. Bede’s has a long relationship with the Neighborhood Youth Association, an Episcopal institution working with at-risk children in Venice & Mar Vista. We provide two scholarships annually for young people who are attending college after having been part of the NYA program. The NYA uses the Parish Hall for several events during the year and several parishioners are after-school tutors at the NYA.

The Very Rev. Canon James Newman is the 3rd Rector of St. Bede’s and has served since 1990. He is the Dean of the West Los Angeles Deanery and a member of the Los Angeles Diocese’s deputation to the General Convention. He has attended every General Convention since 1979 in various capacities, including service as a deputy in 1985 and 1988. He has also worked at the national church levels on projects involving liturgy and music, college chaplaincies and social justice issues. He has served as a college chaplain in Minnesota and the Diocese of Los Angeles, and has been a member of the diocesan Commission on Ministry and Standing Committee. Formerly he served congregations in the Diocese of Minnesota, where he was also a member of the Standing Committee and chaired the Liturgy Commission. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1978 and the priesthood in 1979 by Bishop Robert Anderson, who at that time was Bishop of Minnesota. Newman was named an honorary Canon of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in 2003 by Bishop J. Jon Bruno.

St. Bede’s was formed in 1966 after the merger of the Church of the Good Shepherd (Venice) and St. John’s Mission (West Los Angeles). Both churches needed new buildings and more space. The Rev. John Donnell led the merged churches as they met in the West Los Angeles Masonic Temple for several years. Following Donnell’s retirement, the Rev. Joseph Reeves was elected to be the 1st Rector of St. Bedes. Following a year-long construction, the new St. Bede’s opened in the fall of 1967. Fr. Reeves served until 1985. He was succeeded by John Adams (interim, 1985-86), Michael Carr (Rector, 1986-89), John Adams (interim, 1989-90), and James Newman (Rector, 1990-). The worship space and parish hall underwent extensive renovation in a major campaign – the 2nd Century Fund (1999-2006).

St. Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace (London, United Kingdom)

The church of St Ethelburga's was built in the 15th century.  Having survived the Great Fire of London and the Blitz, it was almost completely destroyed by an IRA bomb in 1993.  It was rebuilt and opened as a centre for reconciliation and peace in 2002.

St Ethelburga's exists to transform conflict and division into new relationships and peaceful communities.

We do this in several different ways:

1. by creating a unique space for dialogue and encounter;
2. by offering training (including dialogue faciliation, conflict resilience, community reconciliation, conflict coaching and narrative based tools for community building);
3. by offering direct support to communities experiencing conflict
4. by bringing people together through music and the arts.

Our work is a mix of public events, sustained projects, training programmes, and responding to direct requests for support.

Stories of Faith / Stories of Humanity (Pittsburgh, PA, USA)

STORIES OF FAITH | STORIES OF HUMANITY is a social media platform meant to illustrate the role and function of faith in human beings’ lives, through the vehicle of digital storytelling. On this website, people’s raw, intimate stories of faith can be creatively voiced and publicly shared, in an effort to reveal the universal themes of humanity that exist across people’s relationships to faith. The end goal is to demonstrate that we are all part of the same human species, no matter our religious or spiritual affiliation.

While we may not be able to relate to someone’s religious or spiritual affiliation, we can all empathize with what it means to be a human being.

This platform is built on the core belief that it is crucial to share our meaningful personal stories with others, particularly those that have remained unspoken for too long.  Faith and religion are considered taboos to discuss in our society; people stay silent due to fears of hostility and invalidation.  It takes courage to publicly voice one’s intimate experiences about a sensitive topic such as “faith”.  Yet honest dialogue is the only way that compassion, empathy, and solidarity might eventually occur in our currently fragmented world. Furthermore, narrating our meaningful personal stories often provides people with catharsis, coherency, and freedom–particularly when voiced to an empathetic, receptive community.

Symons Valley United Church (Calgary, AB, Canada)

Vision Statement

Your church, at the centre of the community.  Welcome Home!

Mission Statement

We are called to be a vibrant and affirming Christian community, sharing God’s love and engaging ALL through dynamic worship, strong family ministry and loving hospitality, in service and outreach to the community.

The Charter For Compassion

On Sunday, March 15, 2015, the congregation of Symons Valley United Church voted unanimously to affirm The Charter of Compassion.

The Board has been studying Karen Armstrong’s Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life since October 2014. A Visioning Working Group was created to discern how the congregation could be actively engaged in being compassionate in our world. One activity has been to commit to making sandwiches for Calgary’s Drop-In Shelter each Communion Sunday. The congregation makes approximately 400 sandwiches each month.

Now that the congregation has signed The Charter, the question is, ‘what are we going to do to uphold our commitment to a more compassionate world?’

Following a period of study and reflection our congregation became an affirming congregation, Sunday, June 8, 2008.  Our affirming statement is as follows:

“We declare that Symons Valley United Church is an Open and Affirming congregation

We believe that all people are sacred in the eyes of God, welcome at God’s table, and entitled to  full and equal participation in the life of the church.

We recognize that congregations have historically condemned and excluded some persons and groups of persons through active effort or complicit silence.

In response to our understanding of Christ’s invitation to the table, we declare that we will continue our struggle to be open and affirming of all, regardless of sexual orientation, family composition, age, ethnic, cultural or spiritual background, gender identity, physical or mental capabilities, and we will work to show our understanding of the Realm of God as a place of diversity and justice by our actions and our witness to the world.”

THE AFFIRM COMMITTEE PURPOSE

To support the congregation in carrying out the Symons Valley United Church’s Mission and Affirm Statements of accepting all people in an intentional way.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To maintain and develop a library of background material on Affirm United’s program, educational videos, and publications to groups and individual within the church.

To engage in advocacy and awareness training within the congregation regarding issues relative to being an Affirming Congregation.

Establish support groups and networks within the congregation for GLBT persons.

To network, support and share with other congregations working on inclusivity issues

Maintain a display table of resources available through the committee.

To move towered a full inclusion of other marginalized individuals and groups.
