While talking to one of my first clients on the phone, she sweetly said “So you can Doula me at home and in the hospital?" I replied “Yes I can.” Shortly after this conversation the concept of “DoulaMe” was born.
I quickly realized that many moms are not aware of what a Birth Doula can do for them through the journey of birth and after the baby has arrived. Our training, continuing education and numerous births have made Doulas a really important option for moms to consider when creating a birth team.
My training was completed by DONA International and I am involved in continuing education courses on birth, breastfeeding and postpartum care regularly.
My journey to becoming a Doula happened shortly after a dear friend had what some people would consider a "nightmare" birthing experience. She did not feel heard, nor did she feel like she had options. As a result, she holds these feelings even today. I felt helpless while she told me her story and I knew right away I wanted to help women have better experiences. I got trained shortly after and I knew this work was what I was made to do!
What was I doing before I became a Doula? I have a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling and have worked on teams dealing with domestic violence, crisis interventions and severe mental illness. After working in Mental Health I worked as an Organizational Psychologist and helped companies with personnel placement and team development.
On a more personal note, my life changed in 2013 when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a long year of treatment and she made it through! We all buzzed our heads before the chemotherapy started. The entire experience changed my life and shortly after my husband and I got married!
I come from a large family of 7 children and now have 9 nieces and nephews. We are very diverse with 5 of my siblings being adopted and it resulted in a whole lot of love. My family dynamic and culture taught me to understand and appreciate all family types.
Some closing thoughts: Since starting birth work, my outlook on women, families and our community has become much clearer. We are trying to create a world where we can be our true selves within a cohesive and nurturing community. My work is to use all of my training, experience and passion to help you through the journey of pregnancy, birth and beyond. With evidenced-based work and my heart connected to your experience, I work hard to create this new community I believe we all need.
Peace and love!
