Little Village (Fayetteville, AR, USA)

The Little Village offers classroom extension and enrichment programs, inspired by Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio Emilia philosophies, with the aim of facilitating children’s natural development and love of learning by encouraging self-sufficiency, critical thinking, and balance in the mind, body, and spirit. As they prepare for the world, now and in the future, we foster development of strong sense of self, of community and of stewardship, as demonstrated in weekly good deeds, field trips, tours, and exploring things that make Northwest Arkansas unique.

We recognize that learning can happen anywhere at any time, therefore academic components are seamlessly woven into daily activities as we venture out into our local community. Groups are intentionally kept small (around 8-15 children, ranging from 5-12 yrs) to encourage close relationships and provide a sense of self-security within larger communities and eventually in the world.

Drawing from the Montessori Method we help prepare children for the world-at-large by helping hone their practical skills and providing the chance to exercise decision-making in real, but controlled settings around our community. We take weekly field trips (museums, library, campus tours, parks), math, science, geography, manners and courtesy, world cultures, and other practical exercises in social engagement.

Founded on the belief that learning is healthy and therapeutic for the individual and the larger community, the Waldorf philosophy provides a dimension of connection to the natural world and to each other through reflection and reverence. This is demonstrated through art, music, literature, play and dance as well compassionate acts and good deeds.

In line with the principles of the Reggio Approach, we consider the teacher as co-learner and collaborator with the child, not simply an instructor. Assisted by other former teachers, activities and lessons are planned based on the children's interests, asking questions to further understanding, and often actively engaging in the activities alongside the children, rather than sitting back and observing the learning process.
