New Roots (Louisville, KY, USA)

New Roots partners with community leaders and institutions in the Louisville metro area for our bi-weekly Fresh Stops of local produce. Our focus is on reaching neighborhood residents with limited access to fresh food.

Mission

New Roots is a non-profit organization that works to develop a just and thriving food system in the Ohio River Valley Region.

Company Overview

New Roots seeks to meet the needs of urban communities by improving access to fresh food for urban residents and marketing opportunities in the city for local and regional farmers. The New Roots program has impacted the local food system through the development of the Fresh Stop Project, a community-driven fresh food distribution program. New Roots also seeks to provide nutrition education, conduct health research, and spearhead policy campaigns that will improve the disparities currently present in our food system.

New Roots includes a wide range of community partners; including 4th Avenue United Methodist Church, City Fresh of Cleveland, Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of Louisville, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wesley House, Presbyterian Hunger Center VISTA Americorp, and all of our beloved farmers.

Description

New Roots leads Food Justice Leadership Development courses for anyone interested in learning about the present state of our local food system and how to organize for change. We also offer Healthy Eating classes to share information on avoiding diet-related illnesses through cooking from scratch with fresh food.

General Information

Our Fresh Stops are open to everyone and some operate on a sliding scale. Produce shares are ordered one to two weeks in advance and full of the bounty of Kentuckiana's seasonal produce, and come with a newsletter with recipes and information from our farmers. Our classes are free and open to neighborhood leaders.
