Public Health England has been established to protect and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing, and to reduce inequalities. Public health is about helping people to stay healthy, and protecting them from threats to their health. The government wants everyone to be able to make healthier choices, regardless of their circumstances, and to minimize the risk and impact of illness.
It is important that we encourage young people to live healthy lives and that they know the dangers of misusing drugs. We also need drug services to help young people as soon as possible if they have a problem with drugs.
What happens to children before they are born and in their early years can affect their health and opportunities later in life. For example, babies that are breastfed have less chance of getting infections or of becoming obese and therefore developing type 2 diabetes and other illnesses when they get older. And those who grow up in a safe environment and have a healthy relationship with their parents are more likely to do better as they go through life.
We want to do more to help children who grow up in the most at-risk families and to help parents give their children the best possible care. We also want to help children be as healthy as possible by preventing illness, and encouraging healthy behaviors from pregnancy onwards.
The government is helping people to be more active and to eat healthily, and it’s making sure people get the right support to lose weight.
The government wants to reduce the harm tobacco causes by stopping people taking up smoking and helping more people to quit.
The government is making it easier for people who drink to do so responsibly, and it is improving alcohol services locally.
In emergency situations, the government wants to be ready to protect people’s health and prevent deaths.
We’re improving the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and helping survivors to live more comfortably.
