The Salish Sea ~ an ecological treasure of truly global significance!
Located in southwest British Columbia and northwest Washington State, it encompasses the Strait of Georgia, Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan De Fuca, and all the tributary rivers and creeks flowing into them. The Salish Sea’s intricate networks of islands, estuaries, rivers and creeks are home to thousands of phenomenal natural animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
Marine Sanctuaries are special places where water quality, wildlife populations and habitats are protected and restored. Pollution levels are reduced, while eco-tourism revenues are multiplied. An excellent role model is California’s system of four National Marine Sanctuaries which actively protect and restore over 50% of California’s coastal shorelines, nearshore habitats and wildlife populations.
The Salish Sea Coastal Trail will provide a world-class hiking and biking path circumnavigating the Salish Sea Marine Sanctuary. Educational exhibits, outdoor artworks and wildlife will make the Trail even more useful, interesting and enjoyable for all.
