Every Day Compassion is a free app which shifts how we live in and relate to our world. The newest feature, a 365 day calendar of compassionate actions, is a fun, easy way to engage in bettering the world one small step at a time.
Countless individuals taking small actions is as important to creating a healthier society as solutions engineered by governments and leaders. Gratitude, smiles, acts of service, small (or large) donations, civic action and even tweeting about a good cause are among the actions we can all take toward the world we want. The app builds compassion toward self, others, community and planet.
None of the actions require great planning or wads of cash. According to Every Day Compassion Project’s (EDCP) Executive Director, Rahbin Shyne, “We made sure that anyone with access to the app or a calendar can contribute to creating a better world each day regardless of age, income, gender, race or other distinctions.”
There’s also something in it for you. Studies show that the regular practice of compassion has powerful health benefits including lowering stress hormones and increasing our sense of selfefficacy, our sense of power. Another benefit of a mindful compassion practice versus reactive compassion is that it trains the brain to notice and glean more positive information from the world around us. Studies at Emory University, Stanford University’s CCARE and Harvard University among others demonstrate time after time that the mindful practice of compassion benefits mind and body.
“The first game I played was a monthlong game of daily actions. It was part of a book I authored and I didn’t want to suggest something I hadn’t completed myself. After the thirty days, the change of view stuck. My recycling habits increased. I continued to be moved and inspired by others as a rule.”
Another appreciated feature of the Every Day Compassion app is the range of actions spread throughout each month. Everyone will find some of the actions familiar and easy, and others new or mildly challenging. Love taking care of the planet, but are less kind to strangers. Are you naturally generous and grateful, but a wee bit lax in staying civically engaged? This app spreads the love to every area of life.
The Every Day Compassion Project is part of the larger compassion movement inspired by TED Prize winner, Karen Armstrong. Her wish granted, the Charter for Compassionwas created in 2009. Several nonprofit groups such as compassiongames.org, compassionit,com and others have sprung up to bring compassion to schools,cities and countries.The Every Day Compassionapp is the newest addition to the movement.
The Every Day Compassion Project is inviting anyone interested in taking a life changing adventure to join their Executive Director in committing 365 acts of compassion. “Just 100 people successfully completing a year of daily compassionate action adds 36,500 acts of service, kindness, generosity and joy to the world in a single year,” said Shyne. “Multiply that by the impact of each action and you’re talking about touching hundreds of thousands of lives.”
