Affirmed Cities

Gaziantep, Turkey

Gaziantep, Turkey, has become a confirmed compassionate city, the first city in the Muslim world to do so.

A conference sponsored by the city and Gazikent University was held in Gaziantep in March that focused on the theme of moving Gaziantep towards creating a culture of compassion.

Speaking at the conference was Dr. Helen McConnell, co-founder of Compassionate Washington, D.C. In her presentation, shown below, Dr. McConnell called the culture of compassion "an international movement" that challenges "all people to make compassion the basis for all decisions, actions and policies." At times, she said, this can be a "dangerous movement."
