Overview of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada Population: Richmond Hill is a city of over 210,000. It is one of nine municipalities that make up the Region of York (pop. 1.2 million) which is part of the interconnected Greater Toronto Area (pop. 6. 7 million). Compassionate Richmond Hill is part of Compassionate York Region.

History: Richmond Hills was founded in 1873. It is recognized that indigenous peoples lived here long before. The Carrying Place Trail, an indigenous and early settler route from Lake Ontario to Lake Simcoe, travels through Richmond Hill.

Demographics (2021 Census): The City is very culturally diverse. Two thirds of the residents identify as visible minorities, and 90% are first or second generation Canadians. Many are from China, Hong Kong and Iran. Sixty percent of residents have post secondary education. Average age is 42.

Notable Traits: The residents acknowledge how fortunate they are to have an abundance of green spaces, including the Oak Ridges Moraine. There are challenges of high-density growth and car dependency. There are many opportunities for civic engagement – music & arts, sports, community groups, faith organizations. The Richmond Hill Centre for the Arts, the Richmond Hill Central Library are active community hubs. The City is home to the David Dunlap Observatory where the first black hole was discovered.
