Santa Catarina is a municipality in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. It is part of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey. Santa Catarina takes its name in honor of the Catholic saint Catherine of Alexandria. Patroness of philosophers, students, teachers and preachers. it is located 9 km west of Monterrey, being within the coordinates: north 25º45', south 25° 25' north latitude; 100° 43' to the west and east 100º 14' west longitude at an altitude of 680 meters above sea level. The area of its territory is 984.50 km². More than 80% of the municipality is occupied by the Sierra Madre Oriental and much of the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park is located within Santa Catarina. In 2000 the municipality had 227,026 inhabitants.
