About No to Nuclear
There is no silver bullet for the climate crisis—but that hasn’t stopped people searching. Seizing its chance, the nuclear power industry wants us to believe that theirs is the only technical fix for our deliverance. The public, politicians and the media have been easily swayed. This should come as no surprise. After all, the pro-nuclear PR campaign is richly funded and has an army of lobbyists sowing myths while the industry reaps the rewards of taxpayer-funded subsidies.
No To Nuclear calls the industry's bluff. Blasting aside its claims to be safe and green, Linda Pentz Gunter makes the irresistible case that nuclear power is too slow, too expensive, too dangerous and too integrally connected to the nuclear weapons complex, to serve as a rational energy choice.
The book also delves into the lives of Indigenous peoples and communities of colour, who have been harmed the most by the nuclear sector, and questions whether the way we devalue nature and the environment is costing us the chance of a genuinely just energy transition.
About No to Nuclear's Author Linda Pentz Gunter
Linda Pentz Gunter founded Beyond Nuclear in 2007 and serves as its international specialist. Prior to her work in anti-nuclear advocacy, she was a journalist for 20 years in print and broadcast, working for USA Network, Reuters, The Times (UK) and other US and international outlets.
Beyond Nuclear works to support grassroots, national and international efforts to phase out nuclear power in favor of safer energy choices with which to address the climate crisis. The organization also draws attention to the perpetual pathway between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and advocates for a global nuclear weapons ban.
In creating Beyond Nuclear, Linda’s goal was to reach beyond the immediate circle of committed anti-nuclear activists and engage those environmentalists concerned with the climate crisis and peace and the necessity to move away from fossil and fissile energy use. In 2018, Linda launched a new web platform, Beyond Nuclear International,
which aims to reframe the anti-nuclear message through a more human lens.
Primarily a news and essay website, with a strong visual focus, Beyond Nuclear International delivers not only topical news coverage but new and creative ways of communicating the humanitarian impacts of nuclear power and nuclear weapons. It is designed to better connect the global anti-nuclear and climate
movements and, to that end, will also publish articles in their original language as well as in English.
While focusing her writing on the Beyond Nuclear International site, Linda continues to write for Truthout, Counterpunch, Capitol Hill Citizen and others. She also makes appearances on television and radio programs and is a sought- after speaker for conferences and webinars. Originally from the UK, Linda has a BA Honours degree in English and Italian Literature from Warwick University.

The climate crisis has inspired new hope in nuclear energy. Its advocates claim we already have the technology of the future, ready to be perfected and deployed. But as M.V. Ramana argues in this urgent and lucid book, such thinking is not only naïve but dangerous.
Beyond the horrific risk of severe accidents and the intractable problem of waste disposal, nuclear energy fails the two key tests for any climate solution: cost and time. More expensive than wind and solar, it is also far slower to bring online. A typical plant takes a decade to build; permitting and financing often add another. These are years we do not have.

M.V. Ramana is the Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security and Professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of "Nuclear is not the Solution: The Folly of Atomic Power in the Age of Climate Change" (Verso books, 2024), "The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India" (Penguin Books, 2012), and co‑editor of "Prisoners of the Nuclear Dream" (Orient Longman, 2003).
