Embracing Courage and Compassion

Person jumping over a cliff with the title on top that says "Embracing Courage and Compassion"

As we approach January 20, 2025, a pivotal moment in history, the Charter for Compassion reaffirms its commitment to justice, respect, and the interconnected values that uphold our shared humanity.

In these challenging times, the principles of compassion demand that we rise above division and fear, embodying the courage to address injustice while honoring the dignity and perspectives of all. This is no easy task, but as Karen Armstrong, the Charter’s founder, has reminded us: “Compassion is the key to our survival.”

The Charter for Compassion’s mission is rooted in the belief that compassion must be expressed not only as an emotion but as a practical guide for action in our personal lives, communities, and global systems. In the face of the current climate:

  • We recognize the voices of those who voted for the newly elected government and respect their concerns, values, and hopes for the future. Compassion compels us to listen, to understand, and to seek common ground.

  • We take a firm stand against policies and rhetoric that foster division, disrespect, or harm to individuals or groups. This includes addressing the global crises that drive people across borders, often at the cost of their safety and dignity.

  • Compassion thrives in truth. As an organization, we reject hyperbole and fearmongering, advocating instead for honest, respectful conversations.

  • Our mission calls us to support neighbors next door and across borders. The global challenges we face—climate change, economic inequality, and forced migration—require us to collaborate across boundaries with empathy and innovation.

A Call to Courageous Compassion

As we navigate this period of uncertainty, the Charter for Compassion calls on individuals, organizations, and communities to:

  1. Speak with CompassionUse your voice to advocate for the marginalized, to challenge harmful narratives, and to uplift those in need.

  2. Act with Courage: Take tangible actions to support those affected by injustice, whether by volunteering, educating, or advocating for systemic change.

  3. Lead by ExampleModel the values of respect, kindness, and integrity in every interaction, fostering a culture of inclusion and collaboration.

  4. Connect Across BordersRecognize that our challenges are interconnected. Support global initiatives that address systemic inequalities, promote peace, and protect the vulnerable.

Our Commitment Moving Forward

The Charter for Compassion will:

  • Amplify Compassionate Voices: Use our platforms to highlight stories of hope, resilience, and innovative solutions to pressing global issues.

  • Engage Communities: Host conversations and workshops that equip individuals to respond compassionately to local and global challenges.

  • Collaborate Globally: Partner with organizations and initiatives that share our vision of a more compassionate world.

  • Advocate Boldly: Speak out against policies and practices that undermine dignity, justice, and humanity.

Compassion IS the Answer

As we step into the unknown, let us turn to compassion—not as a passive sentiment, but as an active force that unites us. Let us remember that the strength of humanity lies in our ability to care for one another, to build bridges where there are walls, and to nurture the courage to act in the face of adversity.

Together, we can create a future defined not by division, but by the shared commitment to a compassionate, just, and inclusive world. Join us in dealing with the present and planning for tomorrow.

Become a part of our celebration to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and especially consider taking part in our eight part series on recognizing the importance of Beloved Community.

Commit to bringing Peace on Earth by participating in the Peace Game. As we stand for justice, let us learn from one another and support each other in deep listening and constructive doing.

Celebrate our humanity as we joyfully listen to the music that helps remind us of our common humanity.

With warm regards,
