The release of the 2025 Muhammad Ali Compassion Index Report marks a significant step forward in understanding and fostering compassion in communities across the United States. The Charter for Compassion is proud to be an impact partner to the Muhammad Ali Center on this groundbreaking project, which sheds light on how compassion can be measured and cultivated in diverse settings.
Compassionate Cities Take the Lead
Among the twelve pilot cities queried in the report, six are designated as Compassionate Cities: Seattle, Louisville, Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio, and Las Vegas. These cities exemplify the power of compassion-focused initiatives to create stronger, more connected communities. The findings from these cities offer valuable insights for other communities aiming to follow their lead.
What the Index Measures
The Muhammad Ali Compassion Index examines multiple dimensions of compassion, including:
- Community Engagement: Levels of volunteerism, philanthropy, and collective efforts to support those in need.
- Equity and Inclusion: Initiatives that promote fairness, diversity, and opportunities for all individuals.
- Emotional and Social Well-Being: Programs designed to enhance mental health, resilience, and interpersonal connections.
- Civic Participation: The extent of public involvement in decision-making processes and community-building activities.
- Compassionate Leadership: Leadership approaches that prioritize empathy, collaboration, and service to others.
Key Learnings from the Report
The 2025 Compassion Index Report highlights several key findings:
- Compassionate Cities scored higher across most dimensions, particularly in community engagement and well-being.
- Cities with established compassionate initiatives demonstrated greater resilience during crises, highlighting the practical benefits of compassion in action.
- Equity and inclusion efforts in these cities fostered a stronger sense of belonging and social cohesion.
A Vision for Global Impact
While currently in its pilot stage, the Muhammad Ali Compassion Index is poised to expand beyond the initial twelve cities to include communities worldwide. The Charter for Compassion is working closely with the Ali Center to amplify the project’s reach, leveraging its network of nearly 200 compassionate initiatives in the United States. Of these, 115 cities have passed resolutions at the city council level to officially become compassionate communities.
