with Seattle MLK Jr Organizing Coalition
Date: January 11th, 12pm-1pm PST
Conspiracy theories. Anti-democratic and bigoted rhetoric. Biological essentialism. Political scapegoating. Disinformation. Educators across the country are grappling with heightened ideological tensions that put their students and their school communities at risk. Join us for a conversation based on the “Confronting White Nationalism in Schools” toolkit from Western States Center. We'll explore how these dynamics evolved and unpack several strategies that empower educators and students to take back their school communities. We believe schools are hubs of democratic organizing, that's why they are being targeted. This work will advance our collective efforts for an inclusive, multi-racial democracy.
Based in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain States,Western States Center works nationwide to build a future where all people can live, love, worship, and work free from bigotry and fear.
Since 1987 our programs have lifted up the voices of marginalized communities while providing accessible tools and support for grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and collective action. Our work has resulted in concrete policy and institutional changes across the West and beyond.
About the Seattle MLK Jr. Organizing Coalition
The Seattle MLK Jr. Organizing Coalition is an all-volunteer organization composed of grassroots, labor, business, people of color, and progressive community organizations and volunteers from throughout the Puget Sound region. Annually, these groups come together and organize our community's largest tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - the only geographic jurisdiction named in Dr. King's honor.
