As someone who reads our newsletters, you'll remember that the Charter for Compassion was very involved with the XIX World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates that took place last week in Monterrey, Mexico. It was hosted by our strategic partner, Encuentro Mundial de Valores (World Human Values) conference, in which the Charter has played an integral role for the last ten years. During the Summit the Charter offered a panel on Compassion in Action with two Nobel Laureates: Kailash Satyarthi from India, recognized for his involvement in freeing more than 100,000 children from servitude and slavery, and Leymah Gbowee from Liberia who won the prize for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights in full participation in peace-building work. I acted as moderator, and our panel included Gard Jameson, from the Charter Board of Trustees, and David Gershon of the Empowerment Institute and creator of the Peace by 2030 Project.
In addition, we offered a panel on Gaza and Israel, masterfully presented by one of this year's Karen Armstrong Humanitarian Award recipients, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish in conversation with Rabbi Laura Duhan-Kaplan, one of the three closely Charter-aligned Interfaith Amigos.

Anum Mulla, the Charter's Global Youth Strategist, and César Zamora, both Board of Trustee members, facilitated a series of youth panels during the conference.
Finally, the highlight of the Charter was our annual Compassion Banquet in which we recognized five Karen Armstrong Humanitarian awardees, Kailash Satyarthi and Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, mentioned above and Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Nobel winner for her work with indigenous people and the orchestration of the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous peoples. In addition, awards were extended to two youth organizations, PeaceJam and Seeds of Peace.
